Blackrock Hurlathon 2010

A massive crowd attended the Hurlathon held in Church Road on Saturday 6th February. Almost 600 people picked up a caman and participated. Somewhere between 3 to 4000 people visited the club during the course of some 16 hours and witnessed some first class hurling.

The fundraising exceeded all expectations and the final sum raised will not be precisely known for some time as money continues to come in. We urge everyone to hand in the sponsorship cards as soon as possible as we need to order the club gear for distribution on Registration morning on Saturday 6th March.

The Legends match was a showpiece of Cork hurling and the silken skills of a whole generation of Cork and Blackrock hurlers was evident to the thousands who were privileged to witness the exhibition in the club hurling hall on the night. The Cork manager Kevin Hennessy assembled a truly extraordinary team of some 25 Cork Legends who thrilled the crowds.

Blackrock manager Jimmy Brohan, showed his managerial talent by producing a team of Rocky legends who proved that age has not dimmed their talents and skill work. This indoor match proved to be the magnificent backdrop for the demonstration of the art that sets hurling apart. Referee, Colm Lyons allowed the game itself to develop perfectly. Paudie Palmers commentary on the game was first class.

The Blackrock underage club wishes to thank all our hurling visitors who contributed so much to what was an unforgettable day at the Rockies.

All the other games were played in the spirit of the day. The Challenge between the Crocks and the Boys of Blackrock finished three all, with the stretcher only being called for once. Huge attendances of hurlers featured in the coaches challenge games and Longies Louts V Fr. Jacks, the finishing scorelines were unclear. A first class demonstration of hurling was shown by the Gardai, organized by Charlie Barry.

Among the visitors to the club were Jimmy Barry Murphy, Denis Walsh, Tomas Mulcahy, Gerald McCarthy, Sean Og O’hAlpin, Gerry O’Sullivan, Chairperson, Cork County Board, Minister Micheal Martin, Deirdre Clune, and TD. Peter Barry, about to be made a Freeman of Cork also attended.

The organizing committee would like to thank the hundreds of children, boys and girls who took part and the parents who ensured they could. Special mention has to made of the extraordinary generosity of so many people who contributed their professional services to ensure the success of the show and to the club volunteers from all sections of the club, many of whom gave up their entire Saturday to carry out their duties.

Hank Wedel and his band along with Eddie Beale and his musicians saw out the festivities, in what had been a perfect day at Church Road.
