Presentation of medals
night…a great success! A
presentation of medals to the under 14 Hurling County Champions for 2003 and the
under 13 City hurling Champions took place at the hall in Church Road on Friday
6th February 2004. A huge crowd attended this unique presentation,
which continues the ongoing success story of the Rocky youth teams in recent
years. Chairman
of the Juvenile section, Mr Eamonn O’Donoghue, praised the dedication
of the players, their parents and the club coaches in capturing a third county
title in three years. He praised all the coaches from the under-age sections of
the Blackrock club who had facilitated and encouraged these youngsters to
achieve hurling success in the competitions. Wayne
Sherlock and Timmy
Murphy, fresh from their triumphant victory in being crowned 2003 Senior
League champions, both referred to the massive boost and support which the
under-age section of the Blackrock Club provides to the Senior and adult teams
in the club, in their efforts to challenge successfully for senior hurling
glory. They wished all the young players every success in the future. Senior
stars Fergal Ryan and Paul Tierney joined in the presentation of
medals to the 60 young hurlers, while the respective captains Stephen Guerin
(under 14) in a very powerful speech and Patrick Parfrey, (under 13)
called for even greater efforts in the coming years. Under
14 coach Jamie Harrington, reflecting the views of coaches everywhere
urged all members of the panels to be patient especially the youngsters who
might not receive regular games. He regarded all members of each panel as being
vital to the success of the actual teams, which play the games and considered
that the real challenge facing hurling is to ensure regular matches for all
players. A
special presentation was made to J.P. Carroll who represented the Rockies
on the successful under 15 Cork team of 2003. This quite unassuming young man
has tremendous hurling potential, his wholehearted approach and dedication to
the game made him a worthy recipient of a beautiful plaque from Blackrock
captain Wayne Sherlock. Vice-Chairperson, Brother Patrick Fitzgibbon
was loud in his praise of J.P.s inspirational example to the younger players in
the club. Blanche
Mulconry, whose team of
helpers catered expertly for the large attendance, oversaw the catering for the
function. Cahill’s of Ballintemple supplied some of the food, while United
Beverages provided the refreshments. The
very successful evening concluded to the music of the Blackrock under-age
coaches’ band
that is known simply as “The Band”. Trophy's and Medals on Display Eamonn O'Donoghue Wayne Sherlock
