Scoil Barra Beaumont - GAA School of Year 2002

MAJOR GAA HONOUR FOR CORK SCHOOL

Last Saturday was a red-letter day in the sporting history of Scoil Barra, Beaumont when they were declared inaugural winners of the GAA Urban School of the Year. The result, organised by Cumann na mBunscol and sponsored by Roadstone, was announced in the Berkley Court Hotel, Dublin on Saturday night and President Mary Mac Aleese and GAA President Sean Mac Cague were on hand to present the trophy and a cheque for €2,000.

School Principal Mairead Murphy said it was a tremendous honour and achievement for the school and paid tribute to the dedicated work of the staff. “We also acknowledge the  great support and help we receive from our local clubs. Blackrock and St. Michael’s have always been towers of strength to the school and that is now evident in the make-up of their Senior Hurling and Football teams.”

The adjudication panel, chaired by Marty Morrisey of RTÉ were loud in their praise of the school’s entry and the glowing citation is testament to the Trojan work being done for our native games in Scoil Barra. The full citation reads :

“One of the most exciting submissions revealing a deep love of Gaelic Games and a great awareness that a warm learning environment is crucial to any child’s development.

Integrating the school locally and synergising with the main GAA club nearby means playing hurling and football becomes an integral part of the students life at an early stage both during and outside school term.

Maximizing modern technological devices such as CD ROMS means playing sport is not just a healthy occupation but also can be an invaluable learning stimulant.   Scoil Barra Naofa is a benchmark for all schools striving in an urban environment to ensure the GAA and its games retains a dominant niche in the next generations lives.”
