November 2004

Cork Senior Hurling League Quarter Final.

Played at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Tuesday November 2nd 2004.

Blackrock 2 --- 6 Sarsfields 2 --- 12.

Blackrock bowed out of the 2004 league when they were defeated by Sarsfields in this match played under lights. Blackrock lead by two points at half time 1 --- 3 to 0 --- 4 after a poor first half. Two incidents were worthy of note, Trevor Barry’s outstanding save from Kieran Murphy after 15 minutes, sheer class!  Moments later Joe Young tore through the Sars defence to score a brilliant goal.

Within a few minutes of the second half Sars went into the lead following a fine point from David Kennedy while Kieran Murphy tapped in a goal following another good save from Trevor Barry. Sars followed with two further points only for Alan Browne and Joe Young to reply immediately.

However a further goal in the 45th minute from John Murphy for Sars put them well in the driving seat and they never looked back. David Cashman scored a consolation goal in the final minute for Blackrock.

Blackrock’s run has finally come to end in the Cork Senior Hurling league, having won it two out of the last three years, (the 2002 final against St. Finbarrs has not yet been played,) and it has been an amazing sequence of success by this panel of players.

July 2004

Senior County League sponsored by the Evening Echo.

Played at the Glen Field. Wednesday September 1st 2004.

Blackrock 3 --- 15 Glen Rovers 1 --- 9.

A wet, miserable night on the northside, more like November than September. However the Rockies seniors put on a fine performance to capture the two points and put them back near the top of the league tables.

Despite the torrents of rain, the Rockies were a more powerful combination and with brian O'Keeffe and Liam Meaney grabbing goals the southsiders were ahead 2 --- 5 to 0 ---3 at the interval. In truth the Glen had plenty ball but managed to put 12 shots wide on their own pitch in that first half.

When corner-forward Enda Kiely grabbed a third goal, six minutes into the second half, the writing was on the wall for the Glen. With Brian O'Keeffe and Alan Browne in great form and firing over points at will, Fergal Ryan Ken O'Connell and Garry Norberg, ensured there was no way through for the Glen, the game was over long before the end.

Blackrock: Trevor Barry, Garry Norberg, Ken O'Connell, C Murphy, Aidan Ryan, Fergal Ryan, M O'Sullivan,T.J.Coughlan, Adrian Coughlan, Ian Walsh,Liam meaney and Joe Young. Brian O'Keeffe, Alan Browne and Enda Kiely. Subs: Kevin Cummins and Pat O'Sullivan.

July 2004

Senior Hurling Championship.

Pairc Ui Chaoimh Saturday 31st July 2004.

Blackrock 5 --- 21   Muskerry 0 --- 9

There was a certain inevitability about the outcome to this match once Barry Hennebry and Colin O’Reilly fired in goals after about 10 minutes of the first half.

Effectively the Rockies took over the game and would have been out of sight altogether by half time if they had taken further goal chances.

With Paul Tierney and Liam Meaney tearing through the Muskerry defence, the points rained over, the half time score was 2 --- 7 to 0 --- 4. The second half was also very one-sided with Brian O’Keeffe bagging 3 goals, Barry Hennebry firing over points at will, it became a no-contest.

Allowing for the quality of the opposition, the Rockies looked very sharp indeed and ran out easy winners to reach the last eight in the Cork County Championship.

The next game will probably not be played until after the All-Ireland final on September 12th next.

Senior Hurling League.

Played at Na Piarsaigh Grounds.

Friday 8th July 2004.

Blackrock 5 --- 16   Na Piarsaigh 1 --- 14.

Alan Browne is enjoying his hurling these days and this was reflected in his outstanding game for the Rockies in a display which simply over whelmed Na Piarsaigh on the evening. He contributed 2 --- 6 in total, with just 2 points from frees and set up goals and points all over the place. Brian O’Keeffe is simply flying also and added in the not inconsiderable total of 3 --- 1. His finishing has become lethal in recent weeks and he appears in great form.

Blackrock led by 4 --- 4 to 0 --- 10 at half time, despite Na Piarsaigh playing well and putting over some good points, yet this game conceeded to the maxim that “goals win games”. An early goal in the second half from Na Piarsaigh left just three points in it,

However the Rockies found another gear and left Na Piarsaigh for dead with Alan Browne causing mayhem in their defence and Barry Hennebry firing over points from all angles, he finished with six. Enda Kiely added two points while Colin O’Reilly added a further to leave the Rockies at convincing winners.

Fergal Ryan had a fine game at wing back and did some great covering, while Paul McGrath and Joe Young kept a tight rein at centre field .The younger players, such as Garry Norberg, T.J. Coughlan, Brian Cashman and Richard Curtin contributed well and are getting useful experience. This was a good evening’s work, which leaves the Rockies at the top of the Evening Echo Cork Senior Hurling League table along with St. Finbarrs.

Team; Trevor Barry; T.J. Coughlan, Ken O’Connell, Gary Norberg; Aidan Ryan, C Murphy, Fergal Ryan; J Young, Paul McGrath; Barry Hennebry, Liam Meaney and Colin O’Reilly; Brian O’Keeffe, Alan Browne, Enda Kiely.

Subs; Richard Curtin, Brian Cashman, Andrew Goulding.

June 2004

Second Round Cork Senior Hurling Championship.

Saturday 5th June 2004. Pairc Ui Rinn.

Blackrock 1 --- 19 Douglas 2 --- 8

A somewhat subdued shirt sleeved crowd of about 1,200 attended this game on a glorious Bank Holiday Saturday evening at Pairc Ui Rinn. An opportunity for Douglas, a potential banana skin for Blackrock.

A whirlwind start from the Rockies, 3 points in three minutes….Barry Hennebry…..Alan Browne….. Adrian Coughlan free…… as well a couple of goal chances signalled Blackrock serious intent. Douglas full forward Brian Boyle and Gary Wade from a free clawed back two points. An uncharacteristic lapse in the Blackrock defence allowed Gary McLoughlin through to snatch a vital goal which he immediately followed up with a point.

Game On!

Long high ball delivered into the Blackrock square……Douglas forward waits…..Wayne Sherlock moving directly towards the dropping sliotar…….Stephen Moylan static and waiting ………. ….…slight contact!.......Sherlock rises and catches cleanly in the air……..referee Ken Healy awards a penalty!

Gary Wade goal.

After 17 minutes game really on!

Rockies four points behind, Douglas supporters in heaven.

Adrian Coughlan fires over two 65s, Barry Hennebry chips in a point. Fergal Ryan now on the right wing marking Gary McLoughlin defiantly splits the posts from almost 90 metres. His aerial battles with McLoughlin, the Douglas captain and a fine player were the highlight of the evening. The Rocky resoluteness in the face of adversity, the refusal to give in, is the hallmark of this team!

Paul McGrath, who had a busy evening, especially when he moved to midfield after half time, along with Colin O'Reilly added points while Gary Wade and McLoughlin ensured parity at the half hour mark.

The Rockies came out in a determined mood after the break and added three further points, two from Alan Browne and Joe Young, now playing on the wing. Then a series of goal opportunities were missed, due to the brilliance of the evergreen Teddy O'Donovan, the Douglas keeper and coach. These would have put Blackrock out of sight if converted.

As a further party piece, O'Donovan then followed up with a massive free from about 110 metres to leave just two points in it after 45 minutes. That was as close as Douglas could come however as the Blackrock defence shut up shop after that. With Fergal Ryan and Paul Tierney driving forward aided and abetted by John Browne and Wayne Sherlock, Paul McGrath releasing quick low ball to the forwards, the Rockies took a firm grip on the game.

Alan Browne and Brian O'Keeffe were now dominant in the forward line and the points mounted. The long threatened goal from Alan finally arrived in the 55th minute and sealed victory.

Despite the pre-match gloom emanating from the Douglas camp and a number of absentees, this team meant serious business. Only one point from play in the second half for Douglas was not going to be enough however, while an over dependence on McLoughlin allowed for few options. Just three Douglas players scored from open play in the 60 minutes. However the Douglas underage work is now bearing fruit and they are not far off the mark! A less than focused Blackrock team could have been caught out on the night!

Blackrock had a great start and a very good second half. The defence played well and appears to be settling down; with the exception of the first Douglas goal it was very steadfast. Fergal Ryan had an outstanding game, his rapier like attacks caused major problems for the Douglas defence while his handling of young McLoughlin removed a potentially lethal threat from the Douglas attack.

Eight players contributed to the Blackrock scoring tally, and a total of 16 scores came from play. Alan Browne played very well; he was unlucky for a few goals, yet still managed 1 --- 4 from play. His ability to win ball and distribute it (his pass to Colin O'Reilly was a gem!) is second to none. On his day he is without equal! Liam Meaney worked hard all through and kept good ball coming while Brian O'Keeffe roared into the game and picked off two lovely points. Barry Hennebry shot three vital points.

Blackrock advance to meet Muskerry in the next round.

Blackrock:

Trevor Barry, Wayne Sherlock, Stephen O'Keeffe, John Browne, Aidan Ryan, Paul Tierney, Fergal Ryan,(0 --- 1), Adrian Coughlan, (0 --- 4 1f, 2 65s), Joe Young, (0 --- 1), Paul McGrath,(0 --- 1) Liam Meaney, Barry Hennebry,(0 ---3), Brian O'Keeffe,(0 --- 2), Alan Browne,(1 --- 5 1f) David Cashman. Sub. Colin O'Reilly (0 --- 2) for David Cashman.

May 2004

Cork Senior Hurling League

Thursday May 20th at Church Road.

Blackrock 0 --- 13 Erin's Own 1 --- 14

A warm summers evening, a fine crowd, Donie Fleming eventually refereed the game as no referee turned up. Blackrock played very well initially and exchanged point for point with the Glounthaune side for much of the first period. Some erratic shooting by Erin's Own enabled the Rockies to retire at the interval leading by 0 --- 9 to 0 --- 6.

Erin's own launched an all out assault on the Rockies goal in the first five minutes however some wonderful goalkeeping from Frankie Barry defied their best efforts. The key moment arrived in the 36th minute when Brian O'Keeffe just missed a glorious goal opportunity following an inch perfect pass from Alan Browne, which if converted would have put the Rockies five points to the good.

Hurling can be a strange game and for some reason the Rockies seemed to lose concentration. Erin's Own piled on the pressure and a goal from Michael Buckley and a series of points from various forwards saw the East Cork side gradually pull away in what was always an interesting game.

Blackrock; Frank Barry, Richard Curtin, Ken O'Connell, Gary Norberg, Aidan Ryan, Adrian Coughlan,(1 point) T.J.Coughlan, Barry Hennerbry, Michael O'Keeffe, Enda Kiely, (2 points) Liam Meaney, (1 point) Pat O'Sullivan, (2 points) Brian O'Keeffe, (1 point) Alan Browne, (6points, 5 frees) Colin O'Reilly. Sub used, Fergal Ryan.

Cork Senior Hurling League.

Sunday 16th May Church Road.

Blackrock 0 --- 10 Newtownshandrum 5 --- 15

Newtownshandrum were in devastating form against an understrength Rockies team and ran out convincing winners. Newtown started well when Diarmuid Gleeson found the net after a couple of minutes. The Rockies wasted some good chances for points in the early stages and found themselves behind at the interval by 1 --- 8 to 0 --- 4. They were heavily dependent on Enda Kiely from placed balls in the latter stages of the half.

An early penalty to the Rockies in the second half very well taken by Kiely was blocked and cleared by the Newtown sub keeper William McGann. This was followed by an outstanding point from John O'Connor and gradually the All-Ireland champions pulled away. Blackrock could only score four points from play during the entire game, while Newtown was on top in most sections of the field.

Blackrock; Ian O'Driscoll, Gerard Murphy, Garry Norberg, Richard Curtin, Kevin Cummins, Joe Young T.J. Coughlan, David Coakley, Paul McGrath, Pat O' Sullivan, David Cashman,( 3 points) Enda Kiely, ( 5 points, 4 frees,1,65) John Cormack, Alan Browne,( 2 points) Kevin Falvey.

Cork County Championship.

Blackrock 1 ---14 Killeagh 2 ---16

Played at Midleton Sunday 2nd May 2004

A closer match than the final scoreline suggests, the sides were actually level on seven occasions over the hour. However Killeagh finished the stronger and Mark Landers comments that "it was the biggest win in the history of the Killeagh club," reflect accurately the feeling around the East Cork village.

The game itself turned horribly for Blackrock between the 51st and 54th minutes of the game, Colin O' Reilly had a goal attempt saved, Adrian Coughlan uncharacteristically missed a straightforward free, and Sean Murphy was given a straight red card following the John O'Connor tap in goal. Game over!

Blackrock had started well and lead by 1 --- 1 to 0 --- 2 after 10 minutes, however Killeagh's ability to score from placed balls, where Joe Deane and Landers between them accounted for 1 --- 7 enabled Killeagh to keep the scores coming. The East Cork side led by 1 --- 9 to 1 --- 6. at half time.

The second half was a real tough struggle; the Rockies actually led at one stage by a point after 48 minutes but could not increase the slender lead. Excellent Killeagh marking and a fierce will to win ensured the final surge to victory. Brendan Barry and Mark Landers were outstanding for Killeagh, and let nothing be taken from their success.

For the Rockies Stephen O'Keeffe was very solid in defence, while John Browne shadowed Joe Deane as closely as possible (Deane still managed three points from play). Paul Tierney was outstanding at centre back and repulsed many attacks. Joe Young contributed three points from play, while Alan Browne took his goal well and created many chances for team-mates, which may not have gone unnoticed by Cork manager Donal O'Grady who was present.

Enough of analysis lets look at the positive for Blackrock!

No one at Church Road had underestimated Killeagh, (unlike the media pundits). The match was played at full championship pace, and the Rockies were missing four of their heroic defence unit, which had contributed enormously to the County titles of 2001 and 2002. The fact that it held up yesterday for the most part is a plus. Both sides yesterday scored a total of a goal and nine points from general play and Blackrock had some great chances for goals, so the forwards are in good shape. The good form of Alan Browne and Brian O'Keeffe should also ease concerns. The return of Liam Meaney and Wayne Sherlock will add further to the team.

The Rockies may have fallen at the first hurl, but the County Championship race has a long way to go yet. Blackrock now face a resurgent Douglas team on the scenic route, and after the latter's superb effort against hot favourite Sarsfields, (Douglas lost to a last minute point!), no one will underestimate them either.

Team; Trevor Barry, Stephen O'Keeffe, John Browne, Sean Murphy, Derek Gosnell, Paul Tierney, Fergal Ryan, David Cashman, (0 ---1) Adrian Coughlan, (0 ---5,3f,1,65) Barry Hennebry, (0---1) Joe Young,(0 --- 3) Colin O'Reilly, Brian O'Keeffe,(0---2)Alan Browne, (1---2,1f) Paul McGrath

April 2004

Senior Hurling League.

Played at Delaney Park , Monday 20th April 2004.

Blackrock 5 --- 18 Delaneys 1 --- 14.

An overcast evening in a countryside setting in Spring as the Rockies set off in pursuit of further league points. A crowd of about 120 or so attended.

It was 1 --- 6 to 0 --- 9 after 27 minutes of the first half, when the Rockies struck for 3 goals and 2 points within four minutes to leave it at double scores 4 --- 8 to 10 points at the interval. That sums up the difference between the sides. Blackrock simply had awesome power up front, whereas the Blackrock backs blocked out all threats from the Delaneys forwards.

One has to mention the performance of Alan Browne; he contested every ball and won most or laid off to his teammates. A lovely tap to Barry Hennebry in the first half being an example, while he broke lots of ball to his hungry forwards. His final tally of 2 --- 5 (5 frees) is an indicator of his influence, his yellow card on the night an indicator of his commitment.

The second half turned into a training exercise with virtually all the forwards and both centre fielders putting over points, while combining together to achieve scores for each other. Adrian Coughlan contributed a goal and 5 points (1 --- 4 frees), the goal coming when Delaneys were slow in defending their goal line from a 25-yard free. Paul Tierney had a tremendous game at centre back, while Stephen O' Keeffe at full back provided full support.

Richard Curtin played very well especially in the second half and is settling down to the senior pace. Paul McGrath took his goal and point with finesse and it was unfortunate that he had to retire on the stroke of half time. Pat O Sullivan, his replacement took his goal with a powerful shot after excellent work from Alan Browne.

Barry Hennebry added three points, the initial two in the first half when they were most needed. David Cashman has settled in well at centerfield and fired over two lovely scores, Brian O'Keeffe and Joe Young completed the Rocky scoring.

What of Delaneys? There was some very good hurling throughout the field, however the deluge of Rocky scores prior to half time delivered a body blow to their hopes. The Egan brothers put on 1 --- 7 between them, James adding the goal in the final minute. Kevin Foley put over 3 points. Their backs could not contain the hungry Rockies and soft scores in some instances were conceded.

Having obtained 4 points within 72 hours, Timmy Murphy and his selectors must be pleased. It was heartening to see his encouragement of the younger players right up to the final whistle and to see their confidence grow. Another match against the intermediate champions Bride Rovers beckons this week, while the Championship against Killeagh is now on the horizon.

Team; Trevor Barry, Richard Curtin, Stephen O'Keeffe, Ronan Coakley Derek Gosnell, Paul Tierney, Fergal Ryan, Adrian Coughlan, David Cashman, Colin O'Reilly, Joe Young, Barry Hennebry, Brian O' Keeffe, Alan Browne, Paul McGrath. Subs used, Pat O'Sullivan, Ian Walsh. Wayne Sherlock was again umpire.

Senior Hurling League at Midleton.

Friday April 16th 2004.

Blackrock 2 --- 12 Cloyne 3 --- 8.

Although an early season match, it retained its interest right to the end for the 300 supporters who turned up when Trevor Barry caught a ball right under the crossbar as Cloyne tried to equalise with a last shot. The first half was a rather stop/go type of affair, however in fairness to both sets of players, a long shower of rain during the game and the slippery underfoot conditions did not help.

Blackrock, fielding an experimental team due to the absence of the Cork players and injuries with David Cashman and Ian Walsh operating at centre field led by 0 --- 7 to 0 ---5 at half time. Barry Hennebry had scored two points; Alan Browne and Colin O'Reilly added one each while David Cashman bagged three, two from 65s and one from a free. Michael Naughton had contributed four of the Cloyne total.

The second half was much livelier with the scoreline constantly changing. Brian O' Keeffe put over a very good point from the corner after some direct play by Ian Walsh, who broke through from mid-field. In the 15th minute Brian added a goal when he struck home from a long David Cashman free, which was batted out by the Cloyne keeper.

That left 6 points in it and the home fires beckoned, however Cloyne heroic as usual decided to make a game of it. Victor Cusack banged in a goal despite the efforts of Trevor who blocked the initial attempt. A John Browne clearance was then collected by Colin O' Reilly who set up Brian O' Keeffe for his second goal.

In the 50th minute David Ring (any relation to the famous man?) tapped in a second goal for Cloyne while Paudie O'Sullivan added a third. Trevor had again blocked both initial efforts but the ball was not cleared out of danger, which will be a source of some concern to the Rockies. Alan Browne had scored a fine point in between to put the bare minimum between the sides.

Sean Murphy had a very good second half for the Rockies, while David Cashman was always heavily involved at centre-field along with Ian Walsh. Another to catch the eye was Paul Mc Grath making his debut for the Rockies at corner forward. Trevor Barry was his reliable self but needs more cover. John Browne made many fine clearances. Wayne Sherlock performed an unaccustomed role of a one handed umpire due to the recent injury. The Rockies will be very happy to have collected both league points. Cloyne will be disappointed.

Team: Trevor Barry, Richard Curtin, Stephen O'Keeffe, Sean Murphy, Derek Gosnell, John Browne, Fergal Ryan, Ian Walsh, David Cashman, (4 points, two 65s, one free and one from play) Barry Hennebry, (2 points) Joe Young, Colin O'Reilly, (2 points) Brian O'Keeffe, (2 goals, 1 point) Alan Browne (3 points, 1 free) and Paul McGrath.

February 2004

Semi-Final 2002 Senior Hurling League.

Blackrock 1 --- 13 Erin's Own 0 --- 5.

Venue: Caherlag Sunday 8th February 2004.

The beautiful spring sunshine warmed the picturesque Caherlag grounds as Blackrock and Erin's Own played out the much-delayed semi-final of the 2002 hurling league before a fine crowd. By the final whistle, the Rockies had again given out a clear signal that they will be serious contenders for honours in 2004 and haven't gone away.

Erin's Own came into the game with great hopes and while much speculation centred on the return of Brian Corcoran, he attended the game as an ordinary spectator. For all their possession the Glounthaune side had 12 first half wides, some from simple scorable chances and with these misses went whatever chance they had of making a serious contest of this game. Just two points from play over 60 minutes on their own home ground will not do.

After 15 minutes of play the Rockies were three point to one ahead, Adrian Coughlan converting three points from placed balls to a single point from Mark O' Connor. John Browne was playing well at fullback, while Sean Murphy in the corner and Stephen O'Keeffe at centre-back got through a lot of good defensive work.

Up front, while Colin O'Reilly was extremely unlucky with a few goal chances; he did manage a nice point in the 20th minute. Adrian Coughlan pointed a further free in the 24th minute while David Cashman, who is showing greater hunger with every game fired over a point in the 28th minute.

Great goal.

On the stroke of half time, following a foul on Stephen O'Keeffe, a beautiful strike by Adrian Coughlan from all of 100 metres dropped into the square, to be doubled to the net by Colin O'Reilly. This left the score at half time at 1 --- 6 to 0 --- 1.

Two early second half frees for Erin's Own left seven points in it until David Cashman picked off the second of his three points following good work from Brian O'Keeffe who was unlucky not to score a goal after soloing in from the wing.

Excellent defence

The Blackrock defence then shut down the Erin's Own forwards, as Wayne Sherlock, Sean Murphy and Fergal and Aidan Ryan closed up shop, in what is becoming a very settled formation at the back. Fergal was especially adept under the dropping ball. John Browne and Stephen O'Keeffe were heavily involved all through the game.

Even when an Erin's Own attack developed, Blackrock defended in numbers and allowed no space whatever to the attackers to get a shot on goal. Midfielders, Paul Tierney and Adrian Coughlan became increasingly dominant and got through a lot of work throughout the game. Adrian added a further point from a free in the 13th minute of the second half.

In the 15th minute of the second half, Brian O'Keeffe beat two men on the wing to put over a beautiful point. A red card was then shown to Eoin Murphy of Erin's Own following a very heavy challenge on Wayne Sherlock who had stormed into the game. Blackrock proceeded to play some wonderful hurling, with Joe Young making a major contribution, while Barry Hennebry worked very hard.

Wonderful scores. Backs and forwards combined to create some great scores for David Cashman to complete his hat trick of points, while Adrian Coughlan floated over two more from play. Paul Tierney completed the scoring with a spectacular point from some distance. Erin's Own best player Mark O'Connor scored two further points, one from a free and one from play.

Enda Kiely, Ian Walsh and Ronan Coakley were introduced in the final quarter. This latest display by the Rockies must give cause for great satisfaction to Tim Murphy and the Blackrock mentors as they now face St. Finbarrs under new manager Jimmy Barry Murphy in the final of this competition.

Blackrock: Trevor Barry, Wayne Sherlock, John Browne, Sean Murphy; Aidan Ryan, Stephen O' Keeffe, Fergal Ryan, Aidan Coughlan, (7 points, 2 from play, 1(65), 4 frees) Paul Tierney;(1 point) Barry Hennebry, Joe Young, Derek Gosnell; Brian O'Keeffe, (1 point) Colin O'Reilly, (1 --- 1) David Cashman. (0 --- 3)

Subs used: Enda Kiely, Ian Walsh, Ronan Coakley.

Scores of the match: Colin O' Reilly's first time double for a goal in the first half, Brian O'Keefe's individual point, Paul Tierney's long range point, in fact many of the Rockies points from play were skilfully executed and showed great awareness from a series of players on each occasion, who made the openings for the scorers.

Most amusing moment: In the 20th minute of the first half, Mark O' Connor was attempting a difficult free from the 21 yard line when Trevor Barry loudly and accurately predicted the outcome prior to Mark misconnecting with the sliothar. Trevor is definitely a man to be listened to in future.

2003 Cork Senior Hurling League Final.

Sunday 1st February 2004. Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

 Blackrock 2 --- 16               Cloyne 1 --- 8.

It may have been a windy miserable Sunday at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, however Blackrock captured the Conroy Cup with a second half display that certainly cheered up the Rocky supporters. This period showed Blackrock hurling at its vintage best, fast, tough, uncompromising first time hurling, a solid defence, an outstanding and hard working midfield and fast moving forwards.

Paul Tierney’s robust hurling display at centre-field marks him out for an outstanding hurling career, he is looking more and more like a central element, not just on the Rockies team, but also at inter county level. Fit, robust and energetic, he scored four points from play and Cloyne simply had no answer to him.  Not far behind was Adrian Coughlan who scored 9 points (6 frees), but whose precise and crisp striking of a sliothar is a joy to watch these days.

The Rockies defence as usual was rock solid, with new centre-back Stephen O’Keeffe, playing with an air of confidence and maturity. Aided by a fine performance from Munster Hurler of the Year Wayne Sherlock, as well as great displays from Fergal and Aidan Ryan, The backs ensured Cloyne only managed four points from play over the 60 minutes.  Sean Murphy is settling into the corner back role, while John Browne took over the full back slot. Trevor had a somewhat quiet afternoon at the office.

The skilful David Cashman took his two goals very well in the second half and chipped in a point for good measure, while Barry Hennebry grabbed two points.

Liam Meaney suffered an injury during the game, (The picture by Eddie O’Hare in the Evening Echo Sport at page 8 on Monday night the 2nd Feb. gives some idea as to the intensity of the contest.) and was replaced by Ian Walsh. Young Richard Curtin also came on in the second half.

Cloyne were not at the races in the second half, and only Liam O’ Driscoll and Diarmuid O’ Sullivan enhanced their reputations in any way. Four points from play will not do at this level! The team was only a pale shadow of the team, which played Blackrock in the championship.

Coach, Timmy Murphy must be happy with the level of commitment displayed by the Rockies team at this stage of the year. It is indeed a tribute to everyone involved in the Blackrock team that they have taken this competition so seriously; when one would have to question the way this competition is treated. What should be a very prestigious competition; second only to the Championship is completed on the first Sunday in February! Even more ridiculous is the situation where the 2002 Senior Hurling League has only reached the semi-final stage. This problem should be looked at to ensure that the competition is completed on time and has a fitting climax as befits its status.

Blackrock: Trevor Barry, Wayne Sherlock, John Browne, Sean Murphy; Aidan Ryan, Stephen O’Keeffe, Fergal Ryan; Paul Tierney, (4 points) Adrian Coughlan (9 points); Barry Hennebry (2 points), Liam Meaney, Derek Gosnell; Brian O’Keeffe, Joe Young, David Cashman (2 goals, 1 point.).

Subs: Ian Walsh, Richard Curtin.

Man of the Match:  Paul Tierney.

Senior Hurling league semi-final.

Blackrock 2 --- 11   St. Finbarrs  1 --- 12.

Blackrock seniors overcame the challenge of St Finbarrs in the semi-final of the league and now proceed to meet Cloyne in the final. Played in heavy conditions at Mayfield last Sunday, the Barr’s raced into a 5-point lead in the first half. However two goals from Joe Young, combined with Adrian Coughlans accuracy from frees enabled the Rockies to come back into the match before emerging winners by 2 --- 11 to 1 --- 12. Ronan Coakley and Sean Murphy played very well for the Rockies in what was a fine team performance after a long layoff.

Cork County Final Sunday 12th October 2003

Blackrock 1 --- 9   Newtownshandrum 0 --- 17.

Blackrock’s marvellous odyssey in the Cork County Senior Hurling Championship came to an end last Sunday for this year when the Rockies finally had to give way to a very committed Newtownshandrum team in the Cork County Final.

Defeated only once in the championship since 1999, this group of players has given all Rocky supporters some fantastic times winning three county titles, as well as league and City Championship titles.

On the day Newtownshandrum proved the better team and congratulations come from all in Blackrock and best wishes are extended to the Newtown club in the Munster and All-Ireland club championship.

Everybody associated with the Blackrock hurling club would like to express our appreciation and thanks to our inspirational captain, Wayne Sherlock and the players, to Timmy Murphy, mentors and officers, for their massive efforts over the past few years and we all look to the future with hope and confidence.

Permanent TSB Cork County Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Sunday October 5th 2003.

Blackrock 1 --- 12 Cloyne 1--- 10

One could not write the script for the final act in this drama. Second minute of injury time, Blackrock leading by two points, Trevor Barry fails to control the ball on his own line, ball bounces on the line, Trevor falls on the ball, and referee consults umpires and gives a penalty. It takes an eternity to get it organised. The "Rock of Cloyne" himself steps up to take it. This ball could wind up in Cloyne itself. Amid heart stopping excitement, Diarmuid nearly breaks the crossbar, but the ball rebounds 20 meters out. Referee Ken Healy blows for full-time.

This was the agony and the ecstasy of hurling, the joy and the heartbreak, all in a split-second. A more climactic finale one could not imagine, and whatever about the rights and wrongs of the decision to award the penalty, the result would have stood. For Blackrock, the opportunity to play Newtownshandrum in the County Final, for brave Cloyne, a winter of wondering what might have been. Appearing in their very first match as a senior club in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Cloyne came very close to a first ever County Final appearance, only the width of a crossbar prevented them from pulling off a shock result.

This Blackrock team mentors and supporters had never underestimated the Cloyne team and expected a massive battle, which duly materialised. The Rockies had 19 wides during the course of the game and should have had it wrapped up much earlier if they had taken their chances. Again the Blackrock defence, which would have done justice to the Alamo, fought as if their lives depended on it and repelled attack after attack.

Cloyne opened well and took some early chances and when Conor Cusack bundled a ball to the net after 10 minutes following some Blackrock defensive hesitancy, it was very evident that the East Cork side were up for this game. Cloyne led by 1 --- 2 to 0 --- 1 after fifteen minutes. All four of Blackrocks points in the first half came from play, Brian O' Keeffe opening after two minutes, Paul Tierney bagging two, while Liam Meaney added another. Joe Young who had replaced Derek Gosnell broke through in the 23rd minute only to kick the ball wide.

A key moment occurred in the 29th minute when a long free from Fergal Ryan from inside his own half seemed to travel through backs and forwards and deceive Donal Og Cusack in the Cloyne goal and wind up in the net. This brought Blackrock to within one point of the Cloynemen on the scoreline Cloyne 1 --- 5, Blackrock 1 --- 4. Ian Quinlan with two points from frees, Brian Motherway and Colm O'Sullivan from play had points in this half, while a subdued Diarmuid playing at left half back contributed a point from a long free.

The second half was very close, with the sides being level on three occasions, and never more than two points separating the sides. Adrian Coughlan scored with two frees, while Ian Quinlan contributed a point from a free, before Barry Hennebry fired over a point in the 11th minute to put Blackrock in the lead for the first time since the seventh minute of the first half.

In the 13th minute, Trevor Barry then brought off a wonder save from a deceptive ball that was coming in and heading for the top right hand corner of the goal, Noel Keane prevented a goal from the rebound, while the resultant 65 brought Cloyne level. Adrian Coughlan from a free and Liam O'Driscoll with a lovely point from play to keep it level. Fergal Ryan put over a lovely point from all of ninety yards. Noel Keane then received a second yellow card from referee Healy for a foul on Conor Cusack, just outside the small square, from the 21-yard free, Quinlan duly converted to bring the sides to 1 --- 9 each with 23 minutes gone.

Brian O'Keeffe added a point. Then a contender for "miss of the year" took place when Conor Cusack drove wide from 7 yards after a loose ball broke around the square. Two Adrian Coughlan frees concluded the Rockies scoring, while Philip Cahill added one point for Cloyne, before the final drama which will live forever in the memory of all those present.

Cloyne will consider themselves very unlucky to have lost the game, and the last second penalty will be discussed forever in hurling circles. The village was within an inch of a first ever County Final appearance. Every relieved Blackrock supporter could only try to empathise with the distraught Cloyne fans. It would have been cruel either way.

Blackrock were lucky to survive the final drama. The team played some fine hurling all through, but lacked penetration due to a teak tough Cloyne defence. Good ball was delivered to the forwards but the wides just added up as the game wore on. Blackrock scored just 7 points from play.

Wayne Sherlock was simply immense in the Rockies backline, while John Browne came to the rescue several times. The entire Rocky defence harried the Cloyne forward in possession at all times and Cloyne had to work hard for each and every one of their 5 scores from play. Paul Tierney is growing in stature at centre-field and this was one of his finest performances, as well as working hard, he blazed over two good points when they were needed.

Key moments: Fergal Ryan's goal just before half time was crucial. Conor Cusack's miss with just 5 minutes to go. Diarmuid O'Sullivans penalty miss.

Best scores: Fergal Ryan's point from about 80 meters in the 20th minute of the second half. Moments earlier Liam O'Driscoll for Cloyne put over a fine point from the wing.

Man-of-the match: Wayne Sherlock was outstanding in a fine Blackrock defensive unit.

Blackrock: Trevor Barry; Wayne Sherlock, Noel Keane, John Browne; Ciaran Connery, Alan Cummins, Fergal Ryan; Adrian Coughlan, Paul Tierney; Barry Hennebry, Liam Meaney, Derek Gosnell; Brian O'Keeffe,Alan Browne, David Cashman. Subs, Joe Young for Derek Gosnell (24 minute) Sean Murphy for Ciaran Connery (halftime).

Scorers; Adrian Coughlan 5 points, all frees. Fergal Ryan 1 goal and a point. (goal from a free) Paul Tierney 2 points Brian O' Keeffe 2 points. Liam Meaney 1 point Barry Hennebry 1 point

Save this match programme, it is one match that will never be forgotten due to the final drama.

August 2003

Senior County Hurling Championship Quarter Final

Pairc Ui Chaoimh Saturday 24th August 2003.

Blackrock 3 --- 20 Midleton 0 --- 11

This result represented a comprehensive victory by the Rockies over a highly fancied Midleton team. Blackrock were fully focused for the match and played direct skilful and intelligent hurling all over the field as backs and forwards worked tirelessly from start to finish to destroy Midleton. Whether the one point defeat to Midleton in the 2000 Championship was a motivating factor or not this was one of Blackrocks finest performances, crowned by some brilliant individual displays, not least Brian O' Keeffe's hat-trick of goals.

Midleton tore into the Rockies initially and after 5 minutes were two points up from frees. However good steady, sensible play from the Blackrock team, including a glorious point from 70 metres by Paul Tierney and wonderful combination work, which resulted in Brian O'Keeffe's first goal in the 11th minute ensured the Rockies pulled away and stayed there until the end. David Cashman, Liam Meaney added points while Fergal Ryan who marked Michael O'Connell added another from all of 90 meters. Adrian Coughlan converted 3 points from frees and a further one from play during this half.

To emphasise their superiority, Barry Hennebry added a further point just before half time after some exception passing in the forward line. The half time score was Blackrock 1 --- 9 Midleton 0 --- 7.

Midleton were very dependent on Liam Walsh to convert frees, their first point from play coming from John Moynihan in the 19th minute, while O'Connell added a nice point a few minutes later. Otherwise once the Blackrock defence settled down, there simply was no way through for the Magpies. A return of just 5 points from play over the hour is simply not enough at this level.

Features of the Blackrock performance was their direct play, in the air or on the ground and nowhere were Midleton allowed to settle on the ball, while every Rocky tackled and blocked as if their lives depended on it. The ability to work for each other underlined a solid team performance throughout the field, while Trevor Barry's reliability under dropping balls provided a reassuring backdrop; time and again he cleared his line.

Sean Murphy took over from the injured Ciaran Connery in the second half and fitted in nicely. Adrian Coughlan from frees and David Cashman as well as Derek Gosnell increased the lead, before Alan Browne hit a purple patch between the 12th and 15th minutes with three points, two from play. Ger Manley from play and O'Connell from a side-line cut clawed back two points to leave the score at Blackrock 1 --- 16 Midleton 0 ---9 with 15 minutes to go.

The match was as good as over when Brian O'Keeffe struck a great goal following a perfect pass from Alan Browne. Alan was winning everything up front at this stage and displayed great leadership, while his distribution to the other forwards provided a lesson in smart forward play.

Brian added a further point and in the 29th minute crashed home his third goal after some good approach work by Barry Hennebry. Barry and Adrian Coughlan competed the scoring.

The Blackrock full backline of Wayne Sherlock (Captain), Noel Keane and John Browne really dominated the Midleton forwards, forcing them to lose possession or shoot from impossible angles. John Browne in particular was rock solid all through the game. Alan Cummins was under every puck out and blocked or won many of them, while Ciaran Connery's first time hurling accelerated the sliotar towards the forwards regularly. Fergal Ryan enjoyed one of his finest evenings in the Blackrock jersey and certainly enjoyed his direct exchanges with Cork midfielder Michael O'Connell. His point was a "beauty".

At centerfield, Blackrock held sway, as Adrian and Paul worked all through the game, and ensured plenty ball to the forwards, all of whom got on the score-sheet (every Blackrock player from number 7 upwards contributed scores). Adrian Coughlan accumulated eight points in total, including two from play. The combination play from the forwards opened up the Midleton defence and facilitated some excellent scores.

Afterwards, Coach Timmy Murphy admitted that the players had been flying all week at training and that the performance was quite good. Already his focus was on Cloyne, who will provide a major challenge in the County semi-final in September.

Man of the match. Brian O'Keeffe in a classic team performance.

Key moment; in the 27th minute in the first half an all out Midleton attack by a number of their forwards seeking a goal was stopped by the tenacious Blackrock backs and after a series of very fast passing movements, involving several Blackrock players, Barry Hennebry put over a point on the other side of the field.

Referee, Diarmuid Kirwan, was always up with the play.

Scorers for Blackrock.

Brian O' Keeffe 3 ----1 Adrian Coughlan 0 --- 8 Alan Browne 0 --- 3 Barry Hennebry 0 --- 2 David Cashman 0 --- 2 Liam Meaney, Paul Tierney, Derek Gosnell and Fergal Ryan, one point each.

July 2003

Cork County TSB Senior Hurling Championship.

Saturday 19th July Pairc Ui Rinn. 7.30

Blackrock 2 --- 16 Delaney's 3 --- 8

Having come through the back door, Delaney's gave this repeat of the first round game their very best shot, however the Rockies still came out with 5 points to spare and move on in the Cork County TSB championship.

Played in greasy conditions and preceded by a heavy downpour, this game was always exciting as Delaney's managed to peg back the Rockies lead and leave just a few points in it right to the end. However Blackrock had managed to pull 7 points clear with about 7 minutes remaining and always seemed to have reserves to up the game when required.

After a tight first half, when scores were at a premium, Brian O' Keeffe contributed 1 --- 2 to the Rockies total of 1 --- 8, the goal in the 8th minute being a real cracker, there was little in it. The Rockies led by just two points as Delaney's had scored an early goal after just 3 minutes when Mark McElhinney slipped inside the Blackrock defence to catch a high ball and bury it.

Paul Tierney had contributed two fine points from play, while Adrian Coughlan added three from frees. Derek Gosnell added a nice point in the 20th minute, (he finished the game with 2 points). Trevor Barry made some fine saves from awkward high balls that kept coming in from the Delaney attackers

Delaney's had played with just two up in the full forward line, while this free third forward interchanged continually with mid-field, causing problems for the Blackrock markers. George Healy and James Egan along with McElihinny posed some difficulties for the Blackrock backs. due to the space created up front.

On the turnover, Delaney's again persisted with this tactic, which resulted in a lack of power in front of the goal as the Blackrock backs gradually asserted control. Alan Cummins had moved to mid-field while Paul Tierney changed to centre-back. Alan Browne came to centre forward leaving Liam Meaney in the full forward role. These changes brought more cohesion to the Rockies play. The long clearances from both Noel Keane and Paul Tierney were a key feature of this second half.

A deflection from a Delaney's free after 5 minutes of the second half resulted in a goal which brought the scores to Blackrock 1 --- 10, Delaney's 2 --- 6. However that was as close as Delaney's came.

Barry Hennebry immediately contributed a vital score when he sent over a brilliant point after a weaving cross-field solo run. He will score no more valuable point as it settled Blackrock down and calmed the nerves somewhat.

When Adrian Coughlan's shot found the net after Delaney's keeper Vincent O' Brien failed to hold the ball in the 47th minute, it finally gave Blackrock some light and despite a late goal from McElhinney, Blackrock were then in the driving seat. Adrian contributed a total of 1 ---7 in all to Blackrock s total score, six points from frees, one 65, plus the goal.

It was a difficult match for the Rockies as they had played their last Championship match against Delaney's on 3rd May, some 11 weeks ago. Delaney's had nothing to lose, had almost a full team this time and had the motivation to avenge the heavy defeat they suffered in the first match. The fact that they have some very fine hurlers should not go unstated and these were quite capable of causing an upset on the night.

The fact that Blackrock remained motivated and had not underestimated the opposition for this match is a tribute to Coach Timmy Murphy , the selectors and the players. Timmy had always believed this would be a difficult game and had prepared accordingly

"It is over, we will learn from it and move to the next round", stated a relieved Timmy Murphy after the game.

Blackrock now proceed to the Quarter Final and will have benefited greatly from this game.

Delaney's can feel proud of their great effort on the night as they contributed to a fine sporting game of hurling and are well capable of holding their own in the senior hurling ranks.

Blackrock will now play Midleton in the County Quarter-final. Midleton defeated Glen Rovers on Sunday 20th July at Pairc Ui Chaoimh by 1 --- 13 to 0 --- 14.

Few Rockies forget the 2000 match between these sides!

Key moments.

Barry Hennebry's instant response to the Delaney's goal. Adrian Coughlan's goal.

Senor Hurling League Result

The Blackrock Senior hurling team defeated Killeagh in a league game played at Church Road on Saturday last 26th July on the scoreline of Blackrock 1 --- 19 Killeagh 0 --- 11.

Killeagh started well and at one stage led by 0 --- 7 to a goal for Blackrock scored by Colin O’Reilly. However Blackrock came back into the game and were just two points behind at half time.  The Rockies turned on the power in the second-half and ran out comfortable winners in the end scoring 15 points to 4 for the young Killeagh side.

Report of the first round of the Cork County Senior Hurling Championship

Saturday 3rd May 2003.

Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Blackrock      4 --- 19           Delaney’s     0 --- 6

As the score line indicates, this was a one-sided contest.  Liam Meaney scored the first and last Rocky points, while throughout the game, the Rockies were in total control. Cork captain Alan Browne again emphasised his dominance around the goal, either scoring or having a contributing hand (or a foot) in all four goals. His fancy footwork for the third goal, which was put away by David Cashman, was a revelation.

In spite of the slippery conditions, Blackrock made a whirlwind start and were ahead by 2 --- 4 to no score after 12 minutes. Alan Browne got the first goal after 2 minutes, while himself and Brian O’ Keeffe put away the second after 4 minutes. David Cashman scored two fine points from play, while Paul Tierney also added his contribution before George Healy scored Delaneys first point after 14 minutes. The same player missed a “sitter” for a goal later when he dropped a ball in front of the Rockies goal.

Barry Hennebry added two further points, one after a glorious 60 meter run, the other from a long floating ball. Adrian added two frees, David pointed his third, while Derek Gosnell put over a fine point, to leave the score-line at half-time Blackrock 3 --- 10  Delaneys 0 --- 2. Barry Egan had pointed from a free just before half time for Delaneys. Sean Murphy had replaced Ciaran Connery for the Rockies just before the interval.

Following the break, the Rockies were in complete control, immediately Paul Tierney pointed from 70 meters on the wing. Not to be outdone, Fergal Ryan added his from almost 95 meters. One incident after 11 minutes of the second half highlighted the difference in skill levels; a high ball into the Rocky forwards saw David Cashman rise for the ball, kill it dead on his hurley, tap it into his hand and despite being surrounded by the Delaney backs, with one motion pass it to Alan Browne who struck it over the bar. A sublime piece of hurling skill fashioned from the countless hours he spends practicing at Church Road.

Barry, Derek (2), Brian and Alan all scored points, while Alan finished off a Brian O’Keeffe lob to the net.  Delaneys played hurling to the end, but were simply outclassed by a very focused and determined Rocky outfit.

In goal, cool Trevor Barry was outstanding under the dropping ball. Captain Wayne Sherlock led as usual by example, while Noel Keane was rarely troubled. Is there a better left corner back in the county than John Browne? A commanding display! The halfbacks killed off the Delaneys challenge and Ciaran, Sean, Alan and Fergal were very solid, great to see Fergal flying again! The Rockies centre-field kept it simple and kept the ball moving into the forward.  All the forwards scored and kept working throughout the 60 minutes.

Delaneys found the step up to Senior level is a major step indeed, and while the Egan brothers worked hard, the loss of the already injured John O’ Driscoll and Mark McElhinney through suspension along with Paul Crowley being carried off injured after 6 minutes left them with few options. To their credit, the men from Dublin Hill   hurled to the end.

Blackrock now have a long wait for the next round and will not read too much into the victory.  The game indicated however that the hunger for success is still there. Tim Murphy and his mentors had the team well focused and it was clear that it had further gears in reserve if required. The first time striking and skilful touches allowed the forwards more space and they delivered, it will have done their confidence no harm at all for the more difficult tasks that lie ahead.

Peter Hogan the referee had a good game.

Man of the Match; for his creativity and energy around the goal, Alan Browne. However all the Rockies forwards played very well.

Highlights; David Cashman’s silken hurling skills, especially his killing of the ball in the incident described above. Also Delaney’s keeper, Vincent O’Brien’s brave save from a Brian O’Keeffe point blank rasper early in the second half.

Historic hurling match played under the new Pairc Ui Rinn floodlights

Blackrock 1----7 Cork 4----12

In this historic hurling match played under the new Pairc Ui Rinn floodlights on Tuesday January 7th 2003, the Cork Senior hurlers eventually overcame the challenge of a very weakened Blackrock team late in the second half. To put the final result into context the score after 45 minutes was Cork 2---8 Blackrock 1---7, (at that stage Cork had scored a lucky goal when the ball deceived Trevor Barry, whereas Blackrock had missed a glorious opportunity for a goal.)

However from there to the end Cork added 2---4 without reply. With injuries to Alan Cummins and Noel Keane, following Fergal Ryan after 15 minutes the result was largely academic, as the crowd (approx 1400) which packed into the new Boreenamanna Road stand was more interested in seeing how well hurling could be played under lights as well as examining Corks hurling prospects for 2003. To be fair to all concerned the bitterly cold easterly wind militated somewhat against good hurling.

Will Twomey and Kieran Murphy (Sars) had fine games for Cork, while Mark Landers scored some good points. Noel Keane and Wayne Sherlock did some great work in the back line for Blackrock while Joe Young took his goal and two points well.

For the record: to Niall Ronan goes the overall honour of scoring both the first point and goal in the stadium under lights while Adrian Coughlan and Joe Young for Blackrock can claim the honours for the Rockies. The general view was that hurling has a serious future under lights and the prospects of Friday and Saturday night matches under lights is a particularly pleasant prospect to look forward to.

Pairc Ui Rinn is looking very well since its redevelopment, with much better facilities for the spectators. It should really be used for a lot more matches where the crowd would be under 10 to 12000, such as Corks home league matches. The lights may take some getting used to for the players, however if baseball, cricket, hockey can be played under lights, then hurling can certainly be tried out.

Congratulations to all the players who gave a fine exhibition of hurling in spite of the freezing conditions, to the County Board for creating a fine stadium and for having the vision to install the new lights and for allowing free access to everybody on the night. Well done to all concerned on what was a historic hurling night in Cork.

 S.H. League Semi-Final

S.H. League Semi-Final Blackrock V Erin's Own  - this game originally fixed for Sunday Dec 1st V Erins Own has now been postponed due to the fact that they drew on Sunday last with Na Piarsaigh in the U/21 Champ

Munster Club Championship.

Semi -Final Cusack Park, Ennis Sunday 17th November 2002.

Blackrock 1-15 Sixmilebridge 2-13

Words alone are very poor implements to describe the passion, intensity, commitment and honest ferocity with with this Munster Club semi final was played. A roller coaster of conflicting emotions from start to finish and ultimately not even the emotional refuge of a halfway house…. elation for Sixmilebridge, devastation for the Rockies.

This Blackrock team gave it everything on the day, every man did his best for the club, his teammates and his community and while the result was truly heartbreaking, every Rocky left Ennis with pride. A team that was just moments from confounding many of the media pundits and critics was forced to concede victory to a late late point from Sixmilebridge sub Paul Fitzpatrick.

How does one describe this match? Teams level six times, Sixmilebridge lead by four points, Rockies then lead by four points, Sixmilebridge then lead by four points, level at full time, three more points in injury time, two to the "Bridge" and one to the Rockies. Blackrock still attacking (Wayne Sherlock was actually up at the halfway line) at the final whistle. That whistle cut us all to the bone, players and supporters alike.

The Bridge opened the game with a quick goal by Cyril Crowe following a high lobbing ball into the square after 60 seconds and led by 1-2 to 0-1 after five minutes. Blackrock fought back strongly and following a goal by David Cashman and some fine points by Adrian Coughlan (4 from frees) Joe Young, Alan Browne and Brian O'Keeffe, the Rockies eventually led by 1-8 to 1-5 at half time. Alan Cummins, Wayne Sherlock, Fergal Ryan and Ciaran Connery had played very well in defence and generally they had the upper hand in many sectors of the field. Noel Keane and John Browne had shut down the Clare forwards.

However on the resumption the Bridge, with first time fast ball being played to clusters of running attackers with some slick passing began to open up the middle of the Blackrock defence. Following some points, Niall Gilligan finished an excellent move to the net after 10 minutes to open up a lead of 4 points. Blackrock showing fantastic spirit fought back point by point, Barry Hennebry, who was always very involved, Adrian Coughlan, Paul Tierney, Alan Browne and Liam Meaney who roared into the game in the second half all contributed points.

With four minutes left the Bridge equalised and it remained so until the flurry of points in extra time. Liam Meaney's wonderful point in the three minutes of additional time was not enough, as points from Niall Gilligan and Paul Fitzpatrick won the day for the Bridge and they now go on to meet Mount Sion in the Munster Final.

Analysis, where does one begin? From Trevor in goal, who could not be faulted for either goal to David at corner forward, the lads did the club proud and every man stood up to be counted. When hurling matches are recalled and when superlatives are thrown around there can be some exaggeration, while actual events become hazy or over enhanced by the passage of time, this match will surely be remembered as the real thing!

It must have been fantastic for the Bridge to have won (even the Clare Radio commentator was praying for a draw), but when the pain of defeat for the Rockies will recede those players lucky enough to have played may derive some pleasure from having played in one of the truly great hurling matches, a match that befits the great traditions of the two great clubs and the Munster Club Championship.

While every adjective available was used to describe the match in the media reports on Monday, the large crowd present will never forget this game and for the young Rockies boys and girls at the match it will be something to emulate and describe to their own sons and daughters, around Church Road in years to come. The tradition will live on! This team will come back from this narrow defeat and bring back glory again next year. There is only a puck of a ball between the top four or five teams in Munster.

Munster Club Championship First Round.

Pairc Ui Chaoimh Saturday 10th November 2002.

Blackrock 2-13 Kilmoyley I-12

In this absorbing contest, Blackrock raced into a 1-4 to nil lead after 10 minutes following a whirlwind start with a Brian O'Keeffe goal after 30 seconds. However Kilmoyley fought back with some direct hurling and were somewhat unlucky to be called back for a free after goaling. Even so the half-time score was Blackrock 1-7 Kilmoyley 0-7.

There were some classic moments: Trevor Barry brought off a superb save after 15 minutes from a rocket from Shane Brick when he flung himself across the goal line to prevent a certain goal. In fact Trevor had a lot of work to do in the first half as Kilmoyley kept up the pressure. Liam Walsh at centre back and Shane Brick at centre forward for Kilmoyley were having excellent games.

Although Liam Meaney, Barry Hennebry 2 points, Paul Tierney with a point all from play, while Brian o'Keeffe added another showed that the Kilmoyley defences could be breached, a lot of ball came straight back out too quickly from the Blackrock forward lines which put the Blackrock defence under pressure.

Adrian Coughlan put over an early point from a free after the resumption. Barry Hennebry who had an excellent hour added two further points in the second half, while Shane Brick who was the outstanding player on the field contributed a further point. Then from a 65 David Cashman reacted quickly and belted the loose ball to the net while Paul Tierney struck a lovely point to leave Blackrock clear by 3 goals: Blackrock 2-11, Kilmoyley 8 points.

Then it was a case of hold onto your seats as Kilmoyley and Shane Brick fought back point by point, until he also goaled from a close free to leave just 2 points in it with about 5minutes including injury time to go. A further Kilmoyley attack broke down and to their credit Blackrock came down the field where they were awarded a penalty, as Brian O, Keeffe drove into the square.

It was a good decision to opt for the point as it steadied the ship for Blackrock. Brian O' Keeffe, who looked very sharp all through again broke through to add a point to leave 4 points in it at the end. Both sides were clapped off the field and it was richly deserved. There were some great periods of first class hurling in bad conditions from two very committed sides.

So Blackrock advance, but will need to convert much more of the ball which goes into the forward lines into a return on the scoreboard. Blackrock although under solid pressure always retained their composure and finished the stronger, however if you take off the initial 1-4 from the score line, Kilmoyley scored 3 points more than Blackrock over 50 minutes. Yet the Rockies never looked like actually losing the game and appeared to have some reserves in the tank. It took a tremendous team effort from Blackrock to win this match and it was just what was needed after the long layoff since September.

The Blackrock defence held up well to the constant pressure, with Trevor behind it having a great game, while centre field won a lot of ball and distributed it well. To be fair, many efforts for points went just wide and on another day would have gone over

What of Kilmoyley? They have been so close over the last two years and from speaking to some of them afterwards they were really hoping to avoid Blackrock this year, as they were aware that Blackrock would not underestimate them. John Meyler has done a fine job with them but in fairness the club has some very good quality hurlers such as James McCarthy and Ian Brick who hurled well and never gave up.

A great evening was spent at Church Road afterwards, as the Kilmoyley team and supporters came back for a chat and a drink. With players and supporters mixing and chatting, it was clear that a healthy respect and admiration has grown between the two clubs, which have had two fine hurling contests these last two years. This Kilmoyley team deserves success and should form the backbone for Kerry's return to the Munster Senior County Championship in 2003.

Blackrock go to Ennis, with a fierce determination to put it up to the Claremen and advance in the Munster Championship, so a fascinating contest is in prospect. Timmy Murphy and his selectors, Wayne and the team members will do their very best. Well done to everyone involved, it provides so much encouragement to all the young Rockies whose very own heroes are in their own club. As for the supporters, it is great to be on the road again!

Man of the Match: Shane Brick. He eventually scored 1-10, having some beautiful points from play.

Memorable moment: Trevor Barry's save in the first half, absolutely brilliant!

City Championship Final.

Sunday Nov 3rd - the final of the City Championship Blackrock V na Piarsaigh at Ballinlough

Blackrock 1-15 Na Piarsaigh 0-3

This represented little more than a practice match for the Rockies as Na Piarsaigh were short several of their normal starting team and played several lads who had contributed to their famous under 21 win against Glen Rovers the previous day.

It was fairly one-sided with Blackrock ahead by 1-7 to no score after 25 minutes. Alan Browne contributed the goal while virtually all the forwards contributed with points. Special mention has to be made of Adrian Coughlan who contributed 7 points, 5 from frees and 2 from play. He has extraordinary distance, power and accuracy in his shots. Paul Tierney improves with every game and his general play around the centre of the field makes space for several other Rockies.

The defence as usual was rock solid, Wayne Sherlock, although selected on the Munster Railway Cup team, chose to play with the Rockies. Subs, Stephen O'Keeffe, Colm O'Flaherty and Ger Murphy also contributed while Derek Gosnell returned to the fray. Blackrock retained the City Cup, the second major trophy of the year. The first round Munster Club Championship match against Kilmoyley is on next Sunday and after our trip to Kilmoyley last year, no one in Blackrock will underestimate these Kerry hurlers.

Cork County Senior Championship Final

Blackrock 1 --- 14 Newtownshandrum 12 points.

Blackrock won the county final to retain the Sean Og Murphy Cup, by defeating a gallant Newtownshandrum team by 5 points on Sunday 15th September 2002. The Rockies defence exerted a vice-like grip on the Newtown forward sextet and ensured that Trevor Barry had a relatively quiet day at the office. Once Newtown came close in the second half the Rockies once again upped their game and pulled away.

For some reason Newtown rained all early puck outs down on Wayne Sherlock's corner and with Blackrocks most consistent defender in his usual hungry mode, most balls came back twice as fast. With the ever-alert Noel Keane (who gets better with every game) and John Browne in great form Newtown forwards were starved of possession for long periods

Fergal Ryan played with his usual panache and cleared many good balls into the forward lines, while Alan Cummins just gets better and better. Alan eventually won the man of the match award and it was well deserved, especially for his second half display, where he cut off all supplies of ball to the Newtown full-forward line. Ciaran Connery, left nothing past him and provided the final piece of the jigsaw, which constitutes the toughest set of backs in any team in Ireland at the present time.

Blackrocks centre field of Adrian Coughlan and Paul Tierney have improved with every game and Adrians four points from frees and placed balls once again made a major contribution to the Rockies victory. Paul Tierney has become a very experienced operator around the centre and is increasingly beginning to dominate this area ensuring a plentiful supply of ball to Adrian and the forwards.

Some very good ball was supplied into the forwards during the game, Liam Meaney worked hard from start to finish and outplayed no less a centre-back than Pat Mulcahy who had been outstanding all through the championship. David Cashman picked up an early injury and had to retire after just 17 minutes of action. His replacement, young Colin O'Reilly, a product of this years minor team had a fine game and took his two points very well. Barry Hennebry and Joe Young worked hard all through the game and contributed a point each. Brian O Keeffe was very active on the right wing in both halves and took his two points nicely. The most vital score came from Alan Browne, who in the final minute before half time grabbed the ball on the 20-meter line, broke inside, past two backs and buried it in the corner of the net. A significant score which kept a comfort zone between the teams when Newtown made their final challenge in the last 10 minutes.

Wayne Sherlock once again accepted the Sean Og Murphy cup on behalf of the Rockies and the anthem "Bring Glory Home " was belted out with gusto by the assembled supporters. A feature of the support was the incredible number of young boys and girls wearing the rocky jersey with pride. The foundations for the future are in good order around Church Road.

Semi-final Cork County Senior Championship

Blackrock 14 points Sarsfields 11 points

In the Cork County Semi-Final at Pairc ui Chaoimh on Sunday 1st September, Blackrock Senior Hurlers were always in control of Sarsfields in a match that never rose to great heights. Again the Rockies rearguard was excellent all through the game and gave the Sars forwards very little scope. Sars only scored 6 points from play over the 60 minutes.

Alan Cummins had an outstanding match at centre-back and repelled most attacks in the second half. Adrian Coughlans ability to pick off scores from long distances; he scored 3 from play and 3 from placed balls, is a major contributory feature to the Rockies steady progress this year.

Up front, Liam Meaney took his chances very well and finished up with 3 points, while Alan Browne contributed 4 points, including 3 from direct play. The Rockies were most unfortunate not to score a number of goals from some good opportunities however some days they just will not go in!

The Rockies robust no nonsense direct hurling has enabled the team to now reach its second successive County final (or its fourth in five years). That is a fantastic achievement, however the team will have to produce its best performance of the year to take on Newtownshandrum who accounted for Avondhu in an impressive manner in the second semi-final.

The County Final is fixed for Pairc ui Chaoimh on Sunday 15th September at 3.30pm

Quarterfinal Cork County Senior Championship.

Blackrock 3 --- 21 Muskerry 1 --- 6

18th August Pairc Ui Chaoimh

Following the initial exchanges when the scores were close over the first 20 minutes, Blackrock gradually pulled away following a beautiful goal by Barry Hennebry in the 23rd minute. Blackrock led by 1 --- 10 to 0 --- 5 at half time. Adrian Coughlan picked off two lovely points, one from a first time clearance by John Browne. A major worry was the withdrawal of Alan Cummins who had to retire just before half time with an ankle injury.

Blackrock fans need not have worried however as the Rockies tore into Muskerry after half time and the match was finished as a contest long before the end. A feature of the match was the first time hurling all over the field by the Rockies, whose forwards took their points with clinical efficiency. David Cashman soloed over 50 yards to take a lovely point from an acute angle after 10 minutes. The Blackrock rearguard closed off the Muskerry forwards, while Trevor Barry blocked 21yard free midways through the second half. The sheer class of the Blackrock hurling in the final 20 minutes was extremely positive and should provide a confidence boost for the County semi final against Sarsfields on Sunday 1st September, which should be a closely fought game.

Blackrock Seniors advance

Blackrock 1 --- 12 St Finbarrs ! --- 9

Blackrock accounted for St. Finbarrs after a tough match against their oldest rivals to advance to the quarter final of the permanent tsb Cork County Championship where they will play Muskerry. After a hectic opening period the Rockies went ahead by 5 points to 1, however the Barrs had pegged it back to lead at half time by !---4 to 6 points following a Kevin Murray goal, 5 minutes before half time.

The Rockies started well in the second half and within 5 minutes of the resumption had a goal from Barry Hennebry. Adrian Coughlans unerring accuracy from around centre field where he finished with four points from general play was a major contributory factor to keeping the Rockies in front. The Rockies dogged rearguard action in the closing quarter where Wayne Sherlock, John Browne and Fergal Ryan excelled in a brilliant defence ensured victory.

Score of the match : Paul Tierneys sideline cut from about 40 metres which was perfectly floated through the middle of the posts. Technically perfect !
