Senior Hurling Championship

Played at Carrigtwohill Wednesday 10th May

Blackrock 0 - 14 Castlelyons 0 - 10

This was a poor match, with numerous line balls, frees, wides, (the Rockies had 15 wides) and other stoppages. There was no continuity to the play. The Rockies however advance to the third round while Castlelyons have to deal with a bearpit struggle to avoid relegation in a losers group with Douglas (and Killeagh, Na Piarsaigh, Sarsfields, Delaneys, St.Catherines and Bride Rovers).

Again the Rockies were very very dependant on Adrian Coughlan for scores from placed balls, his eventually tally was 0 - 11, including 6 from frees and 3 from 65s. More worringly from play it was Blackrock 0 - 5 Castlelyons 0 - 8 over the hour. The match started at a fine pace with Barry Hennebry firing over two good points from play. Adrian Coughlan pointed two 65s and when Alan Browne put over a point in the 20th minute, it was to be the last point from any Rocky other than the prolific Coughlan.

Castlelyons were also quick off the mark and were level three points each by the 17th minute. Ciaran McGann dominated for Castlelyons at centreback while Timmy McCarthy and Eoin Fitzgerald were dangerous up front. Fergal Ryan and Chris Murphy were playing well for the Rockies The Rockies however were two ahead at the midway mark 0 - 7 to 0 - 5.

Scores were extremely hard to come by in the second half and by the 24th minutes scores were level at 9 points each. Both defences were well on top and were conceeding very little. However five successive points from Coughlan ensured a margin of safety for Blackrock.

In the championship, a win is a win and is everything however more scores from forwards will be required in the third round.
