Under 6's and Under 7's - results
Super league Finals. The under 6/7 Super leagues concluded at Church Road on Saturday 29th September amidst scenes of great excitement. For many of the over 100 boys who took part over the past four weeks, it represented their very first organised fun hurling games. The club was honoured to have the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Donal Counihan present for the presentations of medals and trophies. The Lord Mayor, who is a former hurler with the Blackrock Club, praised the wonderful skills of the young hurlers. Ken Carey and Isabelle Carey from our sponsors also assisted with the presentations. For the record, the BFGs are the Champions of Church road in 2007 and to Paul O' Callaghan and Ciaran Tobin go the bragging rights. The following under 7 hurlers were honoured with the "most positive player" awards; Emmet Sheehan (Wise Owls), Shane Horgan (Pooh Bears), Kevin O'Leary (Red Foxes), Mark Butler (Gruffalos) Niall Murphy ( Stone throwers), Cian McGee (Caterpillars) Jason O'Mahony(Skulduggers), Cian McCarthy (BFGs). Seamus Hartnett, Chairperson, Primary Section, stated "All the young boys are winners today; they played hurling with a skill, honesty and joy that will live in their memories for a long time" Round 3 There were some great matches on Saturday with a spectacular performance from Rory O'Neill from the Caterpillars who scored five goals in their win over the Foxes. Con Broderick, James O'Brien along with Brandon O'Sullivan, Robert Lyons and Kevin O'Leary featured in this game. Adam O'Sullivan, Cian McCarthy and Fionn Crean Barrett of the BFGs overcame the challenge of Sean Murphy, Sam Torres and Alex Byrne of the Owls. A special get well message for the brave David Hanley of the Owls whose hand injury forced him to miss this game but who attended anyway to support his team. Craig Ryan, Adam Hennessy and David O'Dwyer played brilliantly for the Gruffalos in a classic 11 goal thriller with the Bears for which Michael Spence, Stephen O'Riordan and Peter Cotter worked hard. Another close contest resulted between the Stonethrowers with Niall Murphy, Evin O' Leary and Riain O' Neill in great form and the Skullduggers led by Sean Green, Eoin O'Donovan and Luke Hogan also kept the crowd's attention. The match between the BFGs and Caterpillars was a classic with the quality of hurling reaching epic proportions. Seasoned hurling watchers were captivated at the total commitment of the youngsters and the smiling faces all round at the end lit up the Saturday morning. Brian Holland, Jack Lucey and Colm Creedon had huge games for the BFGs while Eoin Dilworth, Robert Buckley and Cian McGee who scored a great goal impressed for the Caterpillars in a pulsating game. The "Stones" rolled onwards with Gavin Burke, Riain O'Neill and Cian Murphy enjoying their morning. Shane Horgan, Peter Kingston and Conor Lavin foraged hard for the Bears. The "Duggers" had great performances from Adam Kilcommons, Jason O'Mahony and Peter Lanighan. Harry Walsh, Daniel O'Dwyer and Thomas Murphy were brilliant for the "Gruffs". The unlucky Owls were just pipped at the end by the smart Foxes. Kieran O'Leary scored a hat trick for the Foxes and he was assisted by Cian Punch and Peter O'Brien. The Owls were well served by Emmet Sheehan, Patrick McSweeney and Sean Murphy who displayed real bravery.
Round 1 Over 100 under 6s and 7s arrived in Church Road for the start of their super leagues. Nerves and excitement were very evident and that was just the parents! Skulduggers 3 - 0 Pooh Bears 1 - 0 Stonethrowers 4 - 1 Gruffloes 5 - 1 Hungry Caterpillars 1 - 1 Wise Owls 1 - 0 BFGs 4 - 0 Red Foxes 1 - 0. The "duggers" dug deep to grab the honey pot from the Bears and Eoin O'Donovan, Daniel O'Riordan and James Walsh were outstanding. The Bears had Eoin O'Mahony and Robert St.Ledger and Stephen O'Riordan in brilliant form. Robert Creagan was outstanding and was ably served by Mark Butler, Adam Hennessy and Joey Boland for the "Gruffs". Cian and Niall Murphy, Oisin Casey and Evin O'Leary gave it their best shot for the "Stones" The Red Foxes were not cute enough for the towering BFGs. Cillian Martin was outstanding in goals for the Foxes, while Kevin O'Leary and Brandon O'Sullivan played their hearts out for the Foxes. Ronan O'Callaghan with a hat trick, Jack Lucey and Peter Cunningham gave gigantic performances. The Hungry Caterpillars didn't give a hoot for the Wise Owls. Ryan O'Neill grabbed the vital goal while Cameron Harlson and Eoin Keating displayed the necessary hunger, Emmet Sheehan, Louis Buckley and Niall Fitzgerald displayed great stick work. The action continues next Saturday, assembling at Church Road at 9.45.
