Super League Finals report The under 8 and 9 Blackrock Super Leagues culminated in the four finals at Church Road last Saturday where they were played in front of a large and highly appreciative crowd. Results; Cup Final: Falcons 4 --- 3 Tigers 4 --- 1. Plate Final: Lions 7 --- 4 Hawks 1 --- 2 Shield Final: Cheetahs 8 --- 1 Eagles 6 --- 0 Bowl Final: Panthers 4 --- 0 Buzzards 3 --- 1. The Cup Final was a titanic struggle between the unbeaten Tigers and Falcons both of which had finished top of their respective leagues with 6 points from three games. The quality of the exchanges, the total commitment of the youngsters as well as the high standard of hurling set this game apart. The game was won by the Falcons in the final minute with a cracking goal. The thunderous applause from the hundreds of spectators following the final whistle was a tribute to the hurling skills of both teams. Unlike their namesakes in New Zealand earlier in the morning, the Blackrock Lions roared to an unexpected victory over a depleted Hawks (due to holidays) in the Plate Final. The Cheetahs also had a surprise victory over the Eagles in a goal fest game which saw the lead changing continuously in the Shield Final. The Panthers overcame the luckless Buzzards in the Bowl Final which was fought just as hard as the Cup Final itself. Ms Debbie Carey representing Carey Tool Hire, the Blackrock Super League sponsors, presented the trophies to the team Captains while every boy received a Super league medal, as in truth they were all winners. The captains were chosen as representing the "Spirit of the Rockies" and were as follows, Alan O'Callaghan, Michael Smiddy, David King, Philip O'Callaghan, Naoise Crowley, Dean Torpey, Paul Tobin, and Sean Dennehy. Tom Cashman and Timmy Murphy assisted with the presentation of medals. The Blackrock Club would like thank the coaches, referees and assistants who ensured that these Super leagues operated smoothly and the boys enjoyed the action. Our thanks also to all the parents who entered into the spirit of the leagues and cooperated over the past 5 weeks. Final League Tables Round 3. Played at Church Road Saturday 18th June. Although Feile fever had enveloped Cork and especially Blackrock over the weekend, the Super Leagues also gave rise to some stirring hurling action at Church Road on Saturday morning last. About a hundred Rockies are involved and are now getting ready for the various finals next Saturday 25th June commencing at 10.20 am. Blackrock Tigers 4 ---2 Blackrock Cheetahs 2 --- 3. This was a very tight match indeed with the revitalised Cheetahs putting it up to the all conquering and table topping Tigers. The return of Fiacre Kelleher from holidays and the able assistance of Ben McCarthy, Paddy Lynch, and Barry Grainger gave the Cheetahs a massive boost however they fell just short, they now meet the Eagles in the Shield Final. TheTigers head for mouth watering Cup Final clash with the also unbeaten Falcons. Luke McGee, Luke Clarke, Philip Buckley and goalkeeper Michael Smiddy were heroes for the Tigers. Blackrock Eagles 8 --- 2 Blackrock Buzzards 7 --- 0 This was a remarkably high scoring game and could have gone either way right the end. The Eagles with Naoise Crowley, Declan O'Herlihy, Killian O'Driscoll and Tighearnain Cronin giving sterling performances clinched victory to put them in the Shield Final with the Cheetahs. The unlucky Buzzards had brilliant performers in Conor Kiernan, Jonathon Dennehy, David Dalton and Cillian O'Brien; they will now play in the Bowl final against the Panthers. Blackrock Falcons 5 --- 1 Blackrock Hawks 2 --- 0 The Falcons remain unbeaten and they accounted for the Hawks with another exceptional performance. Stars on the day for the soaring Falcons were Fionnan Casey, Aaron Murray, and twins Brian and Cathal Walsh. The Hawks had Brian Stokes, Liam O'Sullivan, Philip O'Callaghan and Ciaran O'Connell to the fore and now go on to meet the Lions in the Plate Final. Blackrock Lions 6 --- 2 Blackrock Panthers 2 --- 1. Blackrock's own "Lion King", young David King finally got his just rewards when the Lions won this game against a depleted Panthers team who were missing many regulars. David along with Patrick Fitzgerald, David Cronin, Richard O'Leary and Seamus Hogan played very well. The Panthers had excellent performances from Paul Tobin, Adrian Daly, Kevin Green and Daniel O'Mahony. Round 2 Blackrock Under 8 and 9 Super league results Round 2. The second round matches were played at Church Road on Saturday 11th June before a very appreciative crowd. There were some thrilling games played in the glorious sunshine. The Blackrock Super leagues are sponsored by Carey Tool Hire and will culminate in the finals on Saturday 25th at Church Road. Blackrock Hawks 4 --- 3 Blackrock Eagles 4 --- 1 When referee Jim Cashman's final whistle brought to an end this enthralling game of hurling there was joy and agony. This was a tremendous game and provided the connoisseurs of the caman at Church Road with a cracker. Darragh Jones, Philip O'Callaghan, Kuba Hulanicki and Brian Stokes played exceptionally well for the Hawks while the Eagles had fine hurlers in Jamie Mulcahy, Dermot Creedon, Simon Lougheed and Killian O'Driscoll. Blackrock Cheetahs 4 --- 3 Blackrock Lions 2 --- 6 Blackrock Lions team manager Don O'Callaghan was delighted that his Lions had performed far better than their namesakes in New Zealand earlier that morning. Young David King who scored 1 --- 6, is a fantastic talent, a real "Lion King" who deserves a change of luck for his extraordinary effort. The Cheetahs were happy with their success and will now pose a serious challenge for a place in the Cup Final after this victory. Karl Kennedy, Paddy Lynch, Alan Morgan and Jim Coffee were featured for the Cheetahs, while Seamus Hogan, Richard O'Leary, Conor O'Brien and Adam Murphy tried very hard for the luckless Lions. Blackrock Tigers 4 --- 0 Blackrock Panthers 0 ---- 5. The Panthers fought very hard right to the end of the game but could not get the goals needed. Short some of their players, Panthers Kevin Green, Adrian Daly, Shane O'Callaghan and Daniel O'Mahony played some lovely hurling, and never gave up. This second win for the Tigers puts them in a very strong position to reach the Cup Final if they can defeat the Cheetahs in the final series of games next week. Dara O'Brien, Rory O'Hara, Eoin O'Sullivan and Jim Keating showed some lovely touches in their latest success. Blackrock Falcons 5 --- 2 Blackrock Buzzards 1 --- 1. The Buzzards were actually ahead by a goal at the interval and looked to have the game sown up. The Falcons management sugestions that some astute changes on their part at half time turned the game, however players such as Matthew Casey, Darragh O'Callaghan, Cathal Walsh, and Jack Linehan also played very well for the Falcons who have won both their games. Sean Dennehy, Noel Holland, Tim O'Keeffe and man of the match David Dalton were outstanding for the brave Buzzards who must now await the Eagles next weekend.
Round 1 All matches played on Saturday 28th May. There was great excitement as over 100 boys gathered for the first round of these games held at Church Road. Four matches took place simultaneously, and a great atmosphere prevailed throughout the morning. The games will culminate in the Super league finals on Saturday 25th June next. Eagles 5 --- 0 Falcons 4 --- 5 This was a very close contest with some fine hurling displayed by both sides. It could have gone either way but the Falcons ability to score points finally swung the result their way. Alan O'Callaghan, Brian O'Mahony Areeb Mian and Ciaran Cormack were absolutely brilliant for the Falcons while Kevin Foley, David Redmond, Declan O'Herlihy and Naoise Crowley gave a great exhibition of hurling for the unlucky Eagles. Hawks 3 --- 0 Buzzards 3 --- 0 This match finished in great excitement as both sides tried hard for a winner, however it was fitting that the result was a draw which drew a huge round of applause from the spectators. Ciaran O'Connell, Daniel Meaney and Oisin Wedel were stars for the Hawks on the morning. However they were matched by the performances of James Canning, Dan Lenihan and Scott Carey for the Buzzards. The real winners were both teams which displayed huge commitment Lions 2 --- 3 Tigers 7 --- 1 The Tigers proved too strong for the Lions in this contest and although the luckless Lions tried everything they were unable to convert their chances when they came. David King for the Lions put on an amazing exhibition of hurling and defied the best efforts of the Tigers for much of the game. Conor O'Brien, Jim Murphy and Rory McCarthy gave him wonderful support. The Tigers with Luke McGee, Martin O'Farrell at centre-field, Darragh Behan at centre-back and Eoin O'Sullivan in brilliant form were too strong. Panthers 4 --- 0 Cheetahs 3 --- 0. This match started off badly for the Cheetahs, however a few substitutions at half time brought about a terrific finish. Paul Tobin, Evan Mintern, Alex Kelly and Philip Cashman were the driving force behing the Panthers. However Dean Torpey, Ben McCarthy, David Fitzgerald and Jack O'Donovan were outstanding for the Cheetahs. The best wishes of everyone at the Blackrock Super Leagues go to young Jack O'Donovan who picked up an injury during the match.
