Under 10's and Under 11's reports

Super League under 10 and 11 Finals. Cup Final

Blackrock Knights 5 --- 3 Blackrock Warriors 2 --- 3

Twelve minutes into this final, an extraordinary event took place. Eleven year old Sean Kearney stood over a sideline ball approx 21 meters from the posts. Seconds later his shot had split the posts for one of the finest score this writer has seen from a young hurler. Just like Liverpool a few days earlier , the Knights took the field more in hope than expectation yet they upset all the odds to achieve an amazing victory.

Ahead by 3 - 3 to a point at half time after playing with the strong wind, they secured victory with two late goals. All the boys deserve great praise.

To winning captain Gavin Heaphy and coaches Donnachadh Flynn and Sean Logue go the bragging rights for 2005.

Super League Plate Final

Vikings 5 --- 2 Hawks 4 --- 1

The lead changed many times over the course of this very competitive match, however a hat trick of goals from Stephen Murphy and some beautiful scores from Mark Quirke swung the eventual victory to the Blackrock Vikings.

Olan Hanley got a lovely point for the Hawks, while goals from Aaron Kennedy and Darragh O'Sullivan kept them in the game.

For the Vikings Luke Leahy, Edward Kenny, Daire Conway and captain Ryan Dineen played very well, while Peter O'Brien, Brian O' Leary and captain Matt Bond gave it there all for the unlucky Vikings.

Our thanks to Alan Carey of Carey Tool Hire for presenting the captains with their trophies and to Tom and Jim Cashman and Fergal Ryan for presenting the medals to all the players.

Our thanks also to all the coaches, the parents and the young boys who contributed to making these Super Leagues such an outstanding success. We also appreciated the cooperation of St.Michaels Gaelic Football Club in allowing us to to use their Saturday morning space to complete the finals.

The calculators were out alongside the camans at Church Road last Saturday as the third round of the Super Leagues concluded in tremendous excitement.

The Knights pulled off a major shock when they displaced the unlucky Vikings to qualify for the Cup Final, through a three point scoring difference due to goals in the last minutes.

There was heartbreak for some and joy for others, however all the boys can be proud of their displays of hurling which was a pleasure to watch.

Results;

Blackrock Knights 2 --- 2 Blackrock Hawks 1 --- 3

This bottom of the table clash resulted in a tense exciting game of hurling. Level at half time at 1 --- 1 each, the knights were playing for a place in the Cup Final depending on the result of the other game. The hawks were playing for pride and what a match it turned out to be! Cian Papizon in goal for the Knights had a brilliant game while Gavin Connolly, Craig O’Donovan and Harry McCarthy played very well.

The brave Hawks had great performers in Brian O’Leary, Niall O’Leary and Andy Harrington while Cathal Cormack scored a great goal.

Blackrock Warriors 6 --- 2 Blackrock Vikings 3 --- 2.

This top of the table clash produced a high scoring game, a game of two halves due to the strong wind, however the Warriors had too much firepower up front despite some desperate defending from the Vikings rearguard. The Vikings just failed in the scoring difference to hold onto to their Cup Final place due to the concession of some late goals. Jamie Ryan and Callum- Stewart Crowe gave powerful performances for the Warriors while Ian O’Keeffe and Daniel Buckley were outstanding also.

The Vikings saw great performances from Niall Cashman at full-back while Niall Woods, Ryan Dineen and Luke Leahy had great games. The Warriors on this display must be favourites for the Cup final.

April 30th 2005

It was an early 9am start for the Rocky under 10/11 Super leaguers last Saturday 30th April, when the postponed second round games were played at Church Road. Despite the gloomy weather there was a full turn out for what proved to be two great contests.

These Super Leagues have been a regular feature of the Blackrock hurling year for almost 5 years and follow on from the famous Blackrock Street leagues of the 60s and 70s. Once described by the famous Ray Cummins as "being more difficult to win that an All -Ireland" these leagues allow all young hurlers within the club to take part, have some healthy fun and showcase their hurling skills. The Blackrock Super leagues are sponsored by Carey Tool Hire, whose founder the late Joe Carey supported the development of underage hurling in Blackrock for many decades. Results.

Blackrock Hawks 0 --- 1 Blackrock Vikings 2 --- 1

This was a tremendous game of hurling with both sides giving everything. The Hawks would consider themselves very unlucky not to have won the game in that they missed some glorious opportunities to score. The Vikings powered by Luke Leahy, Nicky O'Mullane, Niall Cashman and Mark Quirke took their scores well and emerged victorious. Niall O'Leary in goal, Peter O'Brien and Cathal Cormack had fine games for the Hawks.

Blackrock Warriors 1 --- 5 Blackrock Knights 2 ---- 0

The Knights were holding on to a one point lead for almost the entire second half of this gripping contest when the lion-hearted Eric Grimes burst through to score a wonderful goal for the Warriors in the final minutes. It was a fitting climax to one of the hardest fought matches ever seen at Church Road. Alan Nolan had a brilliant game in goal for the Knights assisted by Joe Logue and Gavin Heaphy. Peter Lawlor scored both their goals while the Warriors were well served by Kevin Ring, Conor Cunningham and Callum- Stewart Crowe.

The third round of the Super Leagues will be held on Saturday morning 14th May next at 9am.
