The
William Ahern Tournament 2004 |
The William Ahern Hurling Tournament. With the All-Ireland hurling frenzy gripping the Rebel city, the local Blackrock hurling club has been busy planning for its mini All-Ireland under 11 hurling competition. The cream of the under 11 hurlers from clubs in Cork, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny will feature. Named in honour of the late William Ahern, this prestigious hurling tournament will be held at Church Road on next Saturday September 18th starting at 12.15 pm. It will feature teams from Kilkenny such as James Stephens; Roanmore and Lismore from Co Waterford, Durlas Og, Co Tipperary, Sarsfields, Midleton, Na Piarsaigh from Limerick City as well as the Blackrock under 11 team which went all the way recently to the under 12 B County Final. There will be a total of 17 matches played over a five hour period and some of the finest young hurlers in the country will be displaying their skill work. This blitz has been organised by the under-age section of the Blackrock club and is coordinated by the indefatigable J.P. Devine, who has left no stone unturned to provide an appropriate stage for these young hurlers to perform. So for any local hurling fans who are not completely hurled out due to All-Ireland mania, a stroll down to Church Road next Saturday will be rewarded by witnessing some of the next generation of hurling stars who will surely grace Croke Park on All-Ireland day within the next decade. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon?
