Wayne Sherlock brings Liam McCarthy Home

Mahon Pride

Tuesday 28th September 2004 was a big evening in Mahon, when Cork hurling star Wayne Sherlock brought home the famous Liam Mc Carthy hurling cup to his family and his neighbours in Ravendale and Castle Park.

There was a huge turnout of people young and old to welcome Wayne. The local parks had been decorated in the red and white of Cork . Hundreds of youngsters turned up to get autographs and entire families arrived for group photographs with Wayne and the All Ireland cup. Every youngster seemed to be carrying a hurley.

Wayne praised the work of the local clubs in promoting hurling and sport in general and expressed the hope that the many kids gathered to see the cup would play the games as a result of the success of the Cork hurlers. He urged all the hundreds of youngsters to become actively involved in their local sports clubs.

Fr. Pat O'Leary PP Mahon described Wayne as a wonderful ambassador for the people of Mahon and Blackrock and hoped that he would continue to inspire a new generation of hurlers in the area.

John Kennedy, who organised the reception for Wayne, and who coaches the under 8 hurling group in Blackrock had earlier made a presentation to well known local resident Paddy O'Driscoll. Paddy, who lived for many years on the Old Ballinure Road started the current trend of decorating houses in the county colours before big games.
