Sat Sept 27th 2008

Blackrock 3-8  Na Piarsaigh 0-9

On this Glorious Sunny afternoon at Church Road the Blackrock U13 team recorded a victory over na Piarsaigh in the U13 City League final. All players played extremely well in this close match, with Blackrock reversing the result of the U12 Final the previous year.

Na Piarsaigh had a great start and fired over points with tremendous skill. Blackrock eventually edged their way back and goals by Joe Logue and Jack Canning sealed the win.

U/13 Championship

Sat Sept 20th 2008

Blackrock won this magnificent game of hurling between 2 evenly matched sides on Sat Sept. 20th. A goal late in the second half by Nathan Adams proved to be the difference between the sides.

U/13 league semi-final V Douglas

Blackrock overcame Douglas last Wednesday in u/13 league semi final. Goals win matches and so it proved to be in this particular game, with Eoin O Connell, Joe Logue, Brian O Leary and David Hurley doing the damage for Blackrock. Fair play to Douglas who battled throughout but on this occasion Blackrock emerged the victors.

August  2008

Douglas tournament

Blackrock U-13 team participated in the Annual Douglas U13 Hurling Tournament. We played 3 matchs versus Midleton, Eire Og (Ennis) and Durlus Og. A slow start resulted in a defeat to Midleton in first game, and the Rockies improved over their second game to edge out Eire Og. Overcoming Durlus Og in our third game proved too difficult, especially as we lost PJ Green, our best and most consistent player on the day to injury. A rusty start for the u/13s who can only improve as the season progresses.

The tournament was very well organised and run and we would like to thank our hosts for their excellent hospitality. Congratulations to Midleton, the winners of the Shield, and to Durlas Og the winners of the Plate.

October 2007

Under 12 League final.

Blackrock 3 - 4 Na Piarsaigh 3 - 5

The Rockies were ahead in this game by seven points with 8 minutes on the clock however three goals from Na Piarsiaghs turned a possible victory into defeat. Loose Blackrock marking allowed Alan O'Sullivan in, while a very close in free from Jay Cronin along with a deflected ball from another free added to the Rockies woes in the concluding stages.

Piarsaighs were dominant in the early stages and led by 0 - 4 to 0 - 1 at the interval. They increased the lead to four soon afterwards, however a goal for the Rockies from Eoin O'Connell steadied the Church road ship. A long range effort from Eoin McCarthy from 60 meters found its way to the back of the Na Piarsaigh net. A good pass from Eric Grimes put Joe Logue through for a third goal soon afterwards.

A penalty to the Rockies allowed Eoin O'Connell to increase the lead to seven, however the three goal blitz then caught the Rockies. Joe Logue had a final chance but was unlucky not to find the net in the run in.

The Rockies will rue missed chances and being caught at the post, however they can be pleased with their fine performance, which gives them a solid platform on which to construct a good hurling side for the future under the watchful eyes of Wayne Sherlock and Jim Cashman and their mentors.

U-12 Panel Nathan Adams, Eoin Bourke, Jack Canning, Niall Cashman, Gavin Connolly, Cathal Cormack, Kevin Cotter, PJ Green, Eric Grimes, Andy Harrington, Simon Irwin, Darragh Kiely, Joe Logue, Aaron Lynch, Eoin McCarthy, Alex McSweeney, Paul Murphy, Alan Norberg, Eoghan O'Connell, David O'Donnell, Craig O'Donovan, Ian O'Keeffe, Brian O'Leary, Nicky O'Mullane, David Parfrey, Paul Redmond, Peter Stokes, Glen Stokes, Niall Woods, Brendan Couch, David Hurley

June 2007

Under 12 Championship

Played at Nemo Rangers on Saturday 23rd June

St Finbarrs 2 - 12 Blackrock 1 - 2.

This match was level at 1 - 1 at the interval and while the Rockies were short five regulars, the sides looked very even. Joe Logue had converted a fine goal for the Rockies after 15 minutes.

In the second half playing with the wind, the Barrs attacked from start to finish and put over some fine points with Brian Ramsey in particular in great form, assisted by Dylan Quinn and Eoin Comyns. The Rockies had fine performances from PJ Green at full back and Cathal Cormack at centre back. Others who tried hard were Glen Stokes and Ian O'Keeffe, however St.Finbarrs were scoring some lovely points from all angles and deserved their victory. Referee Kevin Murphy handled the game well.

Oct 2006

Under 11 League semi-final.

Blackrock 2 - 4 Douglas 4 - 6

played at Douglas on Saturday 14th October

What a difference a month makes in hurling as Douglas overturned the earlier league result in the game played at Douglas on Saturday 14th October. Playing into a strong wind in the first half the Rockies were up against it and trailed at half time 1 - 4 to 0 - 0. Cathal Cormack at centre back and Niall Cashman at centre field were playing well, however it was evident that many of the 50/50 balls were not being won and the overall performance from the Rockies was not matching the Douglas hunger.

In the second half Blackrock fought hard, none more so than subs Eoin O'Connell and Ian O'Keeffe. Gavin Connolly made three spectacular saves in goal, while Darragh Kiely was excellent throughout. However Douglas got the goals at the right times and ran out deserving winners.

Played at St Vincents on Thur 21st September,

Blackrock 3 - 4 St. Vincents 1 - 4.

Despite the atrocious weather conditions in this game played on Thursday 21st September at the Vincents complex, both sides played some great hurling. However the Rockies with the benefit of the strong wind took a firm grip early on and with the aid of a resolute defence held out from a spirited Vincents counter attack in the second half. Eoin McCarthy with two goals, Niall Woods and Darragh Kiely were in great form.

Under 11 League.

Played at Togher on Wednesday 13th September,

Blackrock 4 - 3 St. Finbarrs 3 - 4

A last minute goal by Glen Stokes ensured Blackrock captured the points in this closely fought and exciting encounter in the 11 league. There was very little between the teams throughout the game. Darragh Kiely impressed at midfield for the Rockies while P.J Green put in a very solid performance at full-back. Others to shine on the evening were Eoin McCarthy and Eoin Burke.

June 2006

Under 11 League.

This was a very close contest in which the Rockies pulled away in the end with a series of goals.

Under 11 League.

played Tuesday 6th June.

Blackrock 0 - 6 Bishopstown 0 - 2

There was very little between these two sides who displayed some great defensive skills during the game.

In fact the hooking and blocking from both teams was excellent and ensured scores were at a premium.

For the Rockies, Brian O'Leary and Aaron Lynch in the forwards produced some great scores while Cathal Cormack and Joe Logue controlled the backline very well.

Nathan Adams produced some fine saves in goal in what was a great panel performance.

May  2006

Under 11 League.

Played at Church Road on Tuesday 9th May.

Blackrock 1 - 4 Glen Rovers 2 - 2

This hurling match had everything, good hurling, two committed sporting teams, great hurling skills, fierce intensity, a large appreciative crowd, excellent refereeing by Brian Roche and a refreshingly positive approach by both sets of mentors.

After a terrific opening period, the half time score was Blackrock 0 - 3 Glen Rovers 1 - 1. Joe Logue scored a very good point for the Rockies just before halftime.

A highlight of the period was the tremendous tussle between Rocky Niall Cashman and Glen man Ciaran O'Brien at midfield. The stick work from both youngsters was of top class and it is evident that both of these youngsters will be hurling stars of the future. Their ability to control the sliotar while attacking defences stood out.

The second half showed no let up. Gavin Connolly was brilliant in goal for the Rockies while Simon Irwin, David McElroy and Glen Stokes put in a great hours hurling. For the Glen Charlie O' Connor, Ryan Meaney and centre back Adam O'Donovan showed great commitment. A late goal for the Rockies from Brian O'Leary gave us a grand stand finish; however the Rockies could not score the equalising point in the final minutes. Although the Glen captured the points, the 40 boys who served up this hurling exhibition were all winners.

Blackrock: Gavin Connolly, Nicky O'Mullane, David Parfrey, David McElroy, Ian O'Keeffe, Eric grimes, Kevin Cotter, Niall Cashman, Simon Irwin, Craig O'Donovan, Joe Logue, Jack Canning, Niall Woods, Glen Stokes, Nathan Adams. Subs used: Billy Murphy, David O'Donnell, Brian O'Leary, Eoin McCarthy, Alex McSweeney.

Report on the Ber Ryan Memorial Tournament in Lismore Co. Waterford.

29 April 2006.

The Rockies under 11s following 2 great wins over Cappoquin 3 -3- to 1-1 and Cois Bride 4 - 1 to nil, qualified for the semi final of the Ber Ryan Memorial Tournament in Lismore Co. Waterford.

Playing wonderful exciting hurling against the local Lismore team the Rockies were 4 - 2 to 1 - 1 up after 10 minutes. However in the space of 1 minute injuries to 5 of our key players ensured that Lismore, having gained the initiative, eventually won by 7 - 2 to 5 - 2.

Joe Logue, Cathal Cormac, Ian O'Keeffe, Niall Woods and Glen Stokes, though injured, showed true Rockies spirit by playing through the pain barrier.

Joe Logue having picked up a nasty leg injury and having been taken off showed immense bravery by insisting on returning to the field of play.

Special mention also to Brian O'Leary, Craig O'Donovan , Glen Stokes and P J Green.

All the players who travelled must be complimented on their behaviour both on and off the field: they did Blackrock and their parents proud.

The Mick Cashman Cup Final.

The Mick Cashman Cup Final took place at Church Road on Sunday afternoon 18th September. The competition for 10 year olds has been an outstanding success and the future of Cork hurling is quite safe should these youngsters develop as hurlers in the fullness of time.

Blackrock overcame Douglas while Na Piarsaigh won through against Sarsfields in the Semi-finals. In the final, a great start by Na Piarsaigh saw them lead at the break by 2 --- 3 to 0 ---1. In the second half both sides scored a further 2 --- 3. Gavin Connolly and Niall Cashman, grandsons of Mick Cashman, scored the Blackrock goals. Tom Cashman in presenting the trophy to Daniel McSweeney the Na Piarsaigh captain warmly praised all the boys in all the teams for their efforts.

Well done to Coaches Tom Daly, Sean Logue, James Tyner and Paul Reidy as well as the under 10 coaches of Cloyne, Brian Dillons, Na Piarsaigh, Sarsfields and Douglas for their Trojan work in running off this league over the past 4 months. Mick Cashman Cup Round 5

Blackrock 7 --- 3 Sarsfields 4 --- 2.

Played at a windswept Church Road last Saturday this high scoring game was won by the Rockies with a three goal blitz just before halftime. The game had been very even prior to that with little between two very committed sides.

The Rockies depended on Joe Logue's accuracy from placed balls while Daniel O'Mahony of Sars turned in a brilliant display. However goals from Cathal Cormack, Glen Stokes, and Eric Grimes put the Rockies in the driving seat.

The second half was very even with Daniel O'Mahony scoring a hat trick for Sars, while Simon Irwin, Joe Logue and Cathal Cormack added goals for the Rockies. Peter O'Sullivan played well in goal for Sars assisted by Paul Hyland at full-back with Craig Donovan, PJ Green and Gavin Connolly playing well for the Church Road outfit.

Mick Cashman Cup Round 4

Blackrock 1 --- 1 Na Piarsaigh 1 --- 2.

This match was played at the Na Piarsaigh ground early on Saturday morning (25th June). A last minute point gave Na Piarsaigh victory. For the Rockies Niall Woods and Eric Grimes were outstanding. With the competition for semi final places hotting up the Rockies now face Sarsfields at Church Road next Saturday 2nd July at 5pm.

Mick Cashman Cup Round 3

Blackrock 4 --- 4 Cloyne 3 --- 2.

This match played at Cloyne on Saturday was a wonderful advert for hurling. Simon Irwin had a great game for the Rockies and converted 1 --- 2, while goals from David O'Donnell, Sean Horgan and Tim Looney gave the Rockies a slight edge. Robert Galvin played a great game while Andy Harringtons sideline cuts were a feature of the game. Blackrock now play Na Piarsaigh next Saturday at Na Piarsaigh as this competition gathers pace.

The Mick Cashman Cup Round

Blackrock 2 --- 3 Douglas 3 --- 5.

This was a fantastic game of hurling played before a very large crowd at Church Road on Wednesday 1st June 2005 as the result was in doubt right up to the end.

Blackrock had started well and were two goals up in the first 10 minutes from from Glen Stokes and Ian O'Leary, however Mark O'Connor and John Moynihan for Douglas replied before half time. O'Connor and Dylan Long added points to leave the score at 2 ---3 to 2 --- 0 to Douglas at the interval.

Points from Joe Logue and Eric Grimes signalled a Rocky fightback. Douglas were not to be denied however and countered with two further points before a Claire Shine goal settled matters. P.J. Green and Ian O'Leary had solid games for Blackrock while Niall Cashman again cleared a lot of ball. Mark O'Connor and Daniel Savage played well for Douglas. This league continues through June.

Niall Woods and Gavin Connolly also caught the eye in the Blackrock backline while Eric Grimes, Eoin McCarthy and Nicky O’Mullane played very well for the Rockies.

Keith McCormack scored a wonderful goal for Dillons while Mark Kelly was their finest player. Brian Manning, Kieran Navey and Shane O’Brien also did well.
