Update May 24th 2004

The Camogie Club is running a Summer Camp in Blackrock as part of the Camogie Centenary Celebrations.

The camp will run Monday to Friday July 5th to July 9th, 10.00a.m. to 3.00p.m. each day. We will cater for girls from 6 years to 14 years and boys from 6 years to 8 years.

The cost is €50 1st child, €30 2nd child in family.

Bookings by the end of month to Mairéad or Doireann at camogie training on Fridays. (forms are available on Saturday mornings.)

The U.12 team have started their league and were disappointed to go down by a point to St. Finbarr's, better luck next time.

The U.14 team have lost one league game to a much stronger Courcey Rovers team but have improved and are in second place with two games to play. We had no luck in the Féile Blitz which was held in Blackrock on 22nd. Paul O'Sullivan was appointed as one of the reherees for the section and did very well in his first outing as a neutral referee. As part of the centenary year the County Board are picking a team of stars to parade in Ballinlough before the Féile Final on Thursday. Róisín deFaoite will represent Blackrock.

We wish Róisín the best of luck in the All-Ireland U.14 Blitz next weekend in Ballyanly when she lines out with Cork.

The U.16 team are level on points with St. Finbarrs at the top of their section. There are no games at the moment because of exams and St. Finbarrs have yet to play Bishopstown who are next in line on points.

The junior team have played one league match and beat Na Piarsaigh. Most other are exam tied with third level and second level exams. The team is training on Wednesdays at 6.00 and are improving all the time.

Blackrock Camogie have new hoodies for sale. The new camogie club crest as designed by Suzanne Meehan is on the hoodie and we will be a very fashionable team in our new gear. It can be ordered from Doireann at any camogie training session.

Update December 15th 2003

St. Vincent’s Indoor Blitz - U-9's.

Our younger girls were invited by St. Vincent’s Camogie to take part in an indoor blitz on Saturday, 13th December. We entered three teams and had a great day in the Vincent’s Indoor Hall. After a great day of camogie with all the girls playing their hearts out the stage was set for a great final between Blackrock 1 and St. Vincents 1.

The home crowd were ecstatic when St. Vincents took an early lead but Blackrock came back and led 3 goals to 1 with three minutes left. St. Vincents came right back and got the goal to draw the game on full time. So on to extra time – Vincents put everything in to it but could not get a score past Amy Dennehy who was outstanding in goal. Blackrock had lots of chances but not being used to indoor the forward two of Dearbhail O’Conell and Grace Marum found it hard to score. Extra time finished at 4 all. It was decided to have one other period of extra time to try and separate the teams. St Vincents got an early goal and try as they might Blackrock could not get past the blanket defence that Vincents used for the rest of the period. We promised to be back next year to win the cup.

Update September 28th 2003

U.12

Blackrock lost to Fr.O'Neill's in the U.12 ¼Final which was played in Ballymacoda. The Blackrock forwards were off target and despite many shots at goal only scored one point from Alison Griffin. Most of these girls will be playing U.14 next year and would hope to do better and be rewarded for their talents.

U.11

We played in the final day of the summer blitz and came second in our section. Some stars of the future were on display - Any Dennehy, Sinéad White and Fiona Norberg to name a few. This was an excellent competition organised over the summer by the Fr. O'Neil's club were the emphasis was on participation and enjoyment. Congratulations to all involved.

U.9

We travelled to Blarney for an U.9 blitz and came home after winning the Plate Final. Overall winners were Mallow and Blackrock beat Blarney by 5 goals to 3 goals in the plate final. Shannon, Claire and Val as forwards were great with Claire scoring three of the goals. At mid field Claire's sister Amy had a great game. The defense did very well in keeping out the Blarney onslaught. The medal presentation and light refreshments were held in the Blarney GAA club to round off a great day. Well done to all. The Blackrock team was; Áine Kearney, Niamh Wedel, Valerie O'Brien, Amy Dennehy, Claire Dennehy, Shannon White, Ailbhe Crowley, Nicole O'Connell, Orlaith O'Connell, Catherine Roynane and Grace Marum.   click here for pictures

Junior

Blackrock entered a junior team in the Butlerstowm 7-a-side competition on Sunday 31st August. This was the first junior team to compete for Blackrock in about 11 years. The team was made up for the most part by girls that have come up the ranks since the club was reformed. To make up the team we had Joanne Cummins, Ann Mills and Clíona Meaney.

The team preformed very well and beat Kilmore from Wexford and Butlerstown from Waterford to qualify to play St. Saviours from Waterford in the quarterfinal. We beat them thanks to the excellent defence of Ann Mills, Cáit Kelleher in goal and Suzanne Meehan who was an outstanding defender in every game.

In the semi-final we came up against Bournea from Tipperary who were a more experienced team. Despite the best efforts of Clíona Meaney in centre field we lost the semi-final 2-2 to 2-9.

Overall it was an excellent day and a great start for the junior team. We are still actively recruiting players. Any one interested contact any of the camogie committee

Camogie Update August 30th 2003

It would appear that nothing has been happening on the camogie front for the summer, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Junior

Blackrock camogie is putting together a junior team for next year's competition and with that in mind we travel to Waterford on Sunday 31st to take part in the Butlerstown 7-a-side competition. Watch the notice board for details.

U-12

The U.12 team has qualified for the County ¼ Final against Fr. O'Neill's. This game will be played in Ballymacoda on Wednesday September 3rd at 6.30. Meet in club at 4.30

Blackrock U. 12¼ Tournament

We hosted our second annual tournament for the Garda Cup on Saturday 23rd August. The weather was great and the club looked at its best. The camogie lived up to expectations and we had some excellent games, despite the hot weather. In section 1, Blackrock 1, Brian Dillons, Millstreet and Bishopstown played some very close games with Blackrock finishing first and Millstreet second decided on goal difference. In section 2, Blackrock 2, St. Vincents, Fr. O'Neills and Barryroe played it out in the heat. It went down to the last game with Fr. O'Neills coming first and Barryroe second. Blackrock beat Barryroe in the first semi-final but the second one went to extra time and it looked like going to golden goal when Millstreet got a goal with a minute to spare. In the plate final Fr. O'Neills discovered some reserves of energy to beat Barryroe in an entertaining game. The stage was set for the final between Millstreet and Blackrock who had played a nil all draw in their section game. There was nothing in it at half time with the score 1-1 to a point in favour of Blackrock. Tired legs were evident in the second half. The Millstreet centre kept the pressure on, but the Blackrock defence of Fiona Norberg and Margaret Moynihan with Kerri Fleming on her début in goal broke down many an attack. Up front Róisín deFaoite was causing problems for Millstreet. But victory was sealed for Blackrock when Alison Griffin hand passed into the goal despite being surround by Millstreet backs and Blackrock won 2-4 to 2-1. We would like to thank any one who helped on the day, Jennifer, Lynda, Amy, Emma, Sarah, Suzanne and Grace from the U.16 team and all the mothers and some fathers, our sponsors for the medals, Liam Meeney for presenting the girls with their medals and all the clubs who took part. We are looking forward to next year and three in a row!

Fr. O'Neills u.11 tournament.

The only games played were in the Fr. O'Neills u.11 tournament. This was a tournament where the emphasis was on participation for the younger players. We are all looking forward to the final day in Ballymacoda on Saturday September 6th. Many stars of the future will be on display that day.

Céilí

Céilí A very good night's entertainment was had by all who attended the second Camogie club céilí. Music again was provided by Ger Murphy who was ably assisted by Fionnán Cogan as Fear a'Tí. It is great to see all generations and age groups mixing on the floor and bringing a good family atmosphere to the club. We look forward to the next one!

U.14 County Final

U.14 County Final Blackrock 1-2 Éire Óg 4-8 We came up against a more experienced Éire Óg team in the final which was played in Ballincollig on June 24th. The Blackrock girls did us proud and it is only a matter of time before we bring home a county title to Blackrock.

Camogie Update 17/06/03

U.14B Semi-Final Blackrock V. Aghabullogue.

Our U.14 team travelled to Coachford on Wednesday 11th to play Aghabullogue in the County Semi-final. This team had played well all year and finished top of their section in the league having only lost one game. Aghabullogue were an unknown team at U.14, but despite them beating our U.16's earlier this year and our U.12's last year we were quietly confident as the girls had trained well and were improving as a team all the time. We started very well and Cáit Kelleher had the ball in the Aghabullogue net twice in the first five minutes. Aghabullogue made some changes immediately to contain Cáit, but the other Blackrock forwards came good and continued to lay on the pressure. Róisín deFaoite opened up the back line on several occasions and was unlucky not to score more. Aoife Brohan at centre field kept the ball in the Aghabullogue half and scored some lovely points from frees and play. Half way through the first half Jennifer Leahy was brought down in front of the goal and Cáit stood up to take the penalty. It was as good a penalty as you'd see any where as she blasted the ball shoulder height past the backs with ease. In the second half Aghabullogue threw everything at us and despite some excellent runs by Michele Healy and Aileen Twomey our backs held firm and gave their forwards no space to score. Emma Fielding in her unaccustomed position of centre back cleared many balls and broke up the Aghabullogue defence on a number of occasions.

Final Score: Blackrock; 7-7, Aghabullogue: 2-2.

In a team of stars it's hard to pick out a few but those to shine were Suzanne Meehan at full-back, Aoife Brohan in centre field, Róisín deFaoite and Cáit Kelleher in the half forward line.

We now play Éire Óg in the final on June 24th at a venue to be confirmed.

Camogie Update 05/06/03

Congratulations to Gaelscoil Mhachan who won their Sciath na Scol final in Pairc Ui Rinn during the week. The final was a personal triumph for team captain Roisin deFaoite who scored 3-4 of her teams's total of 4-5.

The U.14 team have qualified for the county semi-final. This will be played on Tuesday June 10th against Aghabuloge. The venue has to be decided. Hopefully a large crowd will come out and support the girls.

Camogie Update 24/03/03

Two girls from the Camogie Club, Cait Kelleher and Lynda Coughlan are on the Cork minor panel to play Limerick in Ballingarry, Limerick on Sunday March 30th

Camogie Update 11/03/03

Sponsored Marathon;

A large crowd of players and parents were at the Astro Turf in The Ursuline Secondary School on Sunday March 9th for the Camogie Marathon.

Ten teams in all took part, representing different countries who will be taking part in the Special Olympics. We were visited by Eithne Duggan, former Cork senior player and captain. She was on the All-Ireland winning team in September last. She brought the O'Duffy Cup with her and the girls were dreaming of the future as they got a chance to hold the All-Ireland cup. She signed hurleys, jerseys and anything else to hand before having her photograph taken with the players. Copies will be available - get in touch with Mairéad any Friday.

In section 1 we had Ireland, U.S.A., China, Spain and France. France came out on top beating Spain in the Final. These teams were all under 11 and Dóirín Leahy had no trouble refereeing for the afternoon. Many stars of the future were on display not least Niamh O'Leary, Sherelle Naughton, Grace Marum, Amy Dennehy, Doireann Twomey and Emer Fahy. They all splept well on Sunday night.

In section 2 we had the over 11's representing Australia, Italy, Japan, Germany and Jamaica. Competition was very intense and the sliotar left the pitch and narrowly missed the cars and the school building several times. The parents had to be cautioned for getting too involved. In the end Germany overcame Australia in a very close final that nearly went to a penalty shoot out - which goes to show that you can never rule out the Germans even in Camogie!

When all the money comes in we hope to have reached our target of €1,000 to sponsor an athlete in the Special Olympics. Our thanks to all who helped; to Doireann for all the paper work and the organising of the teams etc. to the Ursulines for the use of the Pitch for the afternoon and to God for the weather.

Registration:

Registration for all Camogie players takes place on Saturday March 22nd in the Hurling Club on Church Road. Forms etc. will be available on the day.

Team News:

The U. 16 panel which includes those born in '87, '88, '89 & '90 is training at the moment on Friday evenings from 5.00 to 6.00 in Church Road. We are playing in the B division and all the games will be tough, so a full turn out is expected for training..

Camogie update 29th October 2002

Newcestown 2-3; Blackrock 0-1

In the U.16 semi-final Blackrock came up against a stronger more organised Newcestown team. Blackrock held them well in the first half and gave away as well taken goal as you will see from a free just before half time to leave the half time score at 1-1 to 0-1. In the second half the experience of the Newcestown girls told. They dominated at centre field and their centre back, Aoife Coughlan cleared everything that came her way. Their full forward, Coleen Long moved out and lessened the effect of the Blackrock half backs where Amy Roberts and Jennifer Griffin gave their best. Jennifer Irwin made some excellent runs from centre field in the first half but didn't get the ball as full forward in the second half. Róisín de Faoite, still an U.12 player was the most promising of the forwards and shows great potential. Over all this was a great hearted display from the Blackrock girls who are still eligible for this competition next year. Things can only improve. Again thanks to the mothers who came up trumps with tea and sandwiches at short notice.

Camogie Update to 06/10/02

Seandún U.11B Final.

Blackrock beat Douglas in the Seandún U.11B Final on Saturday 5th Oct. in Church Road. The final score was Douglas 1-0; Blackrock 3-1. The Blackrock girls started off slowly and led by 1-0 to 0-0 at half time. The second half started with a well taken goal by Blackrock to be followed by the only defensive error of the day which let Douglas in for a goal. The Rockies then started hurling and Alison Griffin scored a lovely point. From then on it was a team effort and they had some very unlucky wides. Jennifer Leahy at centre back worked tirelessly and cleared ball after ball. Áine Murray and Emma Murphy in mid-field kept the supply of ball going in to the forwards where Kate O'Brien and Kerri Fleming very unlucky on several occasions. This win was a great result for the girls who turn up regularly for training and listen to their coach Doireann Murray. She has done a great job with them.

U.16 Championship

Blackrock are through to the U.16C championship semi final having beaten Kildorrey by the narrowest of margins in Church road on Sunday 6th Oct. The Kildorrey girls started strongest and had three points scored before Blackrock's Lynda Coughlan scored the first point for them. Orla Murphy for Kildorrey was dominating and the Blackrock girls were finding it hard to contain her. Thanks to goalkeeper, Sarah Murphy and backs, Grace Mulqueen and Andrea Brennan the half time score stood at 0-4 to 0-1 to Kildorrey. Blackrock took over centre field in the second half with Lynda Coughlan and Jennifer Griffin playing their hearts out. In the forwards Cáit Kelleher and Róisín deFaoite kept the pressure on. A change of position with Suzanne Meehan moving to full back and Grace Mulqueen coming to centre forward brought new life to the forwards. Cáit Kelleher took a nice point and a goal to leave the the score at 1-4 to 1-2 with five minutes. Blackrock threw everything the had at Kildorrey who defended very well. But with one minute to go Cáit rounded the backs and sent the ball to the back of the net for the winning score. Blackrock 2-2; Kildorrey 1-4. They now play the winners of Dungourney and Newcestown in the semi-final on the weekend of 19/20 October.

U.10

The girls from U.10 down are still training from 6.00 to 7.00 on Friday evenings in Church Road. We will be moving after the mid-term break. They will be informed at training.

Camogie Update to 12/08/02

U.16:

The U.16 team lost to a much bigger stronger Youghal team in the County ¼Final. This team consisting mainly of U. 14 players have preformed very well and can only improve with time. They also spent a weekend bag packing for funds towards new tops which look very well on them. We were invited to take part in the Dungourney Centenary Celebrations. We played a challenge match against Dungourney U. 16's who are County 12-a-side champions. In a very entertaining game Blackrock emerged victors on a score of 1-5 to 1-2. Sarah Murphy in the backs, Lynda Coughlan in midfield and Cáit Kelleher in the forwards all played well for Blackrock. We are now preparing for the Championship which starts in late September.

U. 12:

Our U. 12's came up against two very strong teams in Aghabullogue and Ballincollig and finished third in their section. Only two teams go forward to the knock out stages, so better luck next year.

Tournament: We hosted a very successful invitational tournament on August 10th. Teams from Na Piarsaigh, St. Vincent's, Brian Dillon's, Bishopstown, Blarney, Fr. O'Neill's and Blackrock took part in a great day's camogie. The weather was very kind to us, sun cream to be added to the first aid boxes for next year! The teams were divided in two sections. Blackrock 2 played in Section 1 and were in bad luck missing a few players. But Clara Griffin in goal and Joanne McSweeney in centre field played their hardest. Fr. O'Neill's finished top of the section with Bishopstown in 2nd place. In Section 2 the games were all very close. Blackrock 1 finished in 1st place with 2nd place decided on the last game of the morning. Brian Dillon's finished ahead of St. Vincent's and went into the Plate Final. The Plate Final between Bishopstown and Brian Dillon's was a very good game. Brian Dillon's were one point up at half time due to the good work of their centre field player - Holly who contained the bigger Bishopstown girls and their goalie Sinead who is only nine years old but is a prospect for the future. In the second half the bigger Bishopstown girls went ahead and won out to bring the plate back to Bishopstown. The stage was set for the Cup Final between Fr. O'Neill's and the Rockies. Fr. O'Neill's were confident and under the guidance of Fiona O'Driscoll were well coached and very skilful. But the Blackrock girls rose to the occasion and played their hearts out. The full back line of Jennifer Leahy, Áine Murray and Margaret Moynihan contained the fast O'Neill's forwards very well. Donna made no mistake in goal. Aoife Brohan and Emma Murphy kept the supply of ball going in to the forward line where Róisín deFaoite was on top of her game impossible to stop. Aoife Brohan accepted the Garda Cup from Fiona O'Driscoll to the cheers of the Rockies. Credit is due to the grounds committee of the Hurling Club - the pitches were in excellent condition and Church Road looked well on the day. Thanks also to the mothers who provided tea and sandwiches on the day. They were appreciated by everyone.

U. 11:

The U. 11's have finished top of their section in the Seandún league and will play Glen Rovers in the Semi final in early September. A date to look forward to. Training continues on Friday at 6.00 for U. 10 down and Tuesday at 5.00 from 10 up.

U. 10:

The U. 10's have played two games against Bishopstown and the series is tied at one game each. As part of the U. 12 tournament a Fun Blitz was run at the break by the older girls in Blackrock. Teams from Blackrock, Fr. O'Neill's and Brian Dillon's with guest players from Na Piarsaigh and St. Vincent's took part in the fun. Many stars of the future were on display and the excitement was great. They all emerged winners on the day.

Camogie Feile Skills Competition

Congratulations to Cáit Ni Cheilleachair from the Blackrock Camogie Club who recently won the Cork Feile Skills Competition. Cáit now goes on to represent Cork in the All Ireland Feile final to be held in Belfast on the week ending 23rd June. Well done Cáit !

Camogie Update to 2nd June 2002

Due to the never ending rain a number of matches have fallen foul of pitch conditions. Numbers training on Friday evenings continue to grow. Any prospective coaches out there please contact mailto:mnimhaoileoin@eircom.net We would welcome you on board.

Results to date

Only two matches defied the weather conditions, both against St. Catherine's.

In our section of the Féile St. Catherine's defeated both Blackrock and Bishopstown well. The game between Blackrock and Bishopstown was abandoned because of a downpour.

On 30th May we travelled to Conna in the U.14 League, hoping to avenge the Féile defeat. But we couldn't break down the Conna girls. Cáit Kelleher and Róisín deFaoite came closest to scoring goals but their shots went narrowly wide. Cáit was the only Blackrock name on the scoreboard with two nice points.

Update to May 19th

In atrocious conditions on Sunday 12th passage held Blackrock to a 1-0 each draw in our first U.12 league game. This was a first outing for some of the Blackrock girls and great credit is due to them to turn up and play in such conditions. The weather can only improve!

On Tuesday it was the turn of the U.14 to travel to mallow. Pitch conditions left a lot to be desired and Blackrock were very unlucky to come up against an excellent Mallow gaolie. We lost 1-0 to 0-1.

Back to the younger girls again on Thursday, with an U.11 seandún game against Na Piarsaigh in Church Road . Again the conditions were far from ideal, but this time we were on the wining side – Blackrock 5-0 Na Piarsaigh 0-0.

Friday 17th and the U.12’s were in action in the tank Field against Brian Dillons. The team put in a great display and despite conceding the first goal emerged victorious – Blackrock 3-2 Brian Dillons 1-0.

On Saturday the U.14 went down to Buttevant despite a great comeback when the sliotar just would not go between the posts. Blackrock 1-3 Buttevant 3-2.

Camogie Annual Report 2001

The indoor season came to a close with the final of the indoor street league. Eight teams in all took part and Victoria Road defeated Meadowgrove in the final. John Browne presented the Garda Perpetual Cup to Grace Mulqueen, the Victoria Road Captain.

The outdoor season got off to a good start when our U-12 team took part in the Glen Rovers invitational Tournament in May. Eight Clubs in all were represented and we beat Kilagh, Erin's Own, Clonakilty and Ballinhassig to reach the final. The traditional rivalry between Glen Rovers and Blackrock Camogie rekindled. After a great game we beat the Glen to bring home Blackrock's first camogie trophy after a number of years. This augurs well for the future.

We were afforded the opportunity to take part in the Feile na nGael Camogie in June since Cork were the host county. We were unlucky not to qualify for the semi-final stage being beaten by a more experienced Athleague team from Roscommon, having beaten Blarney and the Westmeath champions.

We took part in the County U-12 and U-14 leagues. We finished just short of the qualifying stages in both leagues. In the Seandun U-11 and U-13 leagues we were narrowly defeated by Glen Rovers and St. Finbarrs in both plate finals. This is a big improvement on last year, but there is still room for improvement.

We travelled to Miltown in Kerry in July where we retained the shield by beating the Kilcolman camogie team.

We travelled to Dublin to attend the All-Ireland Camogie finals. We played a challenge match against the Ballyboden-St. Endas team in Dublin. The game ended in a draw - a fair result on the day.

On the administrative side a delegate from Blackrock was elected on the Officer Board of the recently formed Cummann Camogaiochta na nOg, Corcaigh. This is an honour for the club and augurs well for the future development of Camogie. We are also represented on the officer board of Seandun.

We would like at this point to thank the Hurling Club without whose support we couldn't function. We must also thank the girls' parents for encouraging them to play and always being available when help is needed. Without the few coaches camogie would not be available for the girls in Blackrock. Hopefully their dedication will continue and their numbers will increase in the new year. Finally on my own behalf and on behalf of the coaches I would like to thank the girls themselves from the youngest to the oldest, they are a pleasure to be involved with.

Mairead Ni Mhaoileoin
