Alan Browne Captains Cork to Munster Championship

Congratulations to Cork captain Alan Browne, who led Cork to victory last Sunday in Thurles in the Munster Final. This was indeed a proud day for the Browne family who have contributed so much to Blackrock and Cork hurling over the past two decades. Well done also to Wayne Sherlock in what was a wonderful team effort. Other Rocky panel members include Paul Tierney and Adrian Coughlan, while Donie Collins was a selector.

Both Olan Kelleher (Gaelscoil Mhachain) and Stephen McCarthy (Scoil Barra) of the Blackrock under 13 panel got their names on the score sheet for Cork in the Primary game, which preceded the Munster Final. It was a fantastic experience for both these Rockies to play in front of over 50,000 people and perform so well.

Senior Championship 2003

Blackrock Seniors will again play Delaneys in the County Championship, date to be fixed.

June 2003

Reminder to all young Rockies

You must wear your full faceguard hurling helmet at all times while training or in matches or even pucking around in the club. This is detailed in the Blackrock code of Good Behaviour, which you have all signed up to. It is not cool, macho or trendy to throw away your helmet during play, it is very very stupid! A recent report states that in the period 1994 to 2000, Waterford Regional Hospital and Cork University Hospital dealt with eye injuries to 308 hurlers; mostly avoidable if full-face guarded hurling helmets had been worn. Some of you may be wearing helmets, which may not be protecting your full face at all times, check them out, ask your coaches if you are unsure. Please sort this out over the summer, what price your eyesight?

June 2003

Under 8/9 Super leagues.

The Sharks pulled off a major surprise last Saturday by capturing the Super league cup for 2003, when they outclassed the Tigers, thus reversing the result of the previous week. The Wolves were much too good for the luckless Lions in the Plate Final. Blackrock Senior coach Timmy Murphy aided by the senior players, Fergal Ryan, Paul Tierney, Barry Hennebry and David Cashman, conducted the presentations of medals and trophies. Timmy gave great encouragement to the young Rockies, pointing out that all these senior players had themselves played in the famous Blackrock Parish leagues. The Club wishes to thank all who contributed to the success of the Super leagues, the players, coaches, referees, grounds people and the parents of the children for their cooperation.

Of the hundreds of Rockies who played for the club during the past week, the following achievements merit mention. Alan Nolan of the Tigers, whose wonderful goalkeeping exploits, kept the Sharks at bay in the Super leagues. David Healy who scored 3 goals and two points in an Under 12 league match against Carrigaline and to Colm Barry who scored 3 goals and a point against Bishopstown in an under 14 league game

June 2003

The Mick Cashman Cup

The finals of the Under 10 hurling Tournament took place at Church road also last Saturday. Ballinhassig defeated the Rockies in an outstanding match to capture the Mick Cashman Cup. Man of the match must surely have been young Gavin Sheehan the Ballinhassig goalkeeper who time and again defied the Rockies. Eoin O' Riordan the Ballinhassig captain accepted the Cup from Tom and Jim Cashman in the presence of their mother Anne Cashman. Both sides were complimented for an excellent final. A special word of praise for JP Devine who organised the Tournament, which was an outstanding success and will become an annual event for under 10 hurlers

Feile competition.

Our Feile hurling panel put up a fine performance against Glen Rovers in the final of the Feile Competition played at Ballinlough on Thursday last before being defeated by 3 --- 8 to 2 --- 5. The Blackrock lads were ahead by a goal at half time however the toll of being requested to play three tough Feile hurling games in 6 days, in the middle of their school exams caught up with them in the second half and they could not manage to compete in the final period when the Glen pulled ahead. Finals of the under 10/11 Super leagues.

Although these finals clashed with the Champions League Finals at Old Trafford, Church Road was the more exciting place to be for the Rocky Cup Finals last Wednesday evening. The unbeaten Saints defeated the Rebels in a highly entertaining final. A wonderful goal from Shane Cunningham proved to be the difference as the Saints were crowned Rocky Super League Champions for 2003. The Rovers defeated the Rockies in the Plate Final. Mr Alan Carey, Director Carey Tool Hire, Our Super league Sponsors presented the Cups to the respective team captains. Our thanks to the coaches Noel O'Keeffe, Kieran O'Sullivan, Norman O'Leary, JP Devine, Kieran Ryan, Richard Stokes and Tim Aherne.

Star of the Week

A special mention this week for David Healy who scored 5 goals and a point against Erin’s Own in an under 12 Hurling challenge match during the week. After spending the first half and the first ten minutes of the second half in goal for the Rockies and bringing off some excellent saves, David moved to full-forward and scored the amazing total in just 15 minutes in what had been a very close game fought by two excellent hurling teams.  Well done, David!

Indoor Hurling - first session in 2003

The Spring 2003 indoor hurling programme commenced last Saturday and continues each Saturday morning until Saturday 1st March. About 150 children turned up at St. Anthonys School Hall and had a fantastic time despite the very poor outdoor weather conditions. Indoor hurling presents an ideal opportunity for youngsters to enjoy themselves while learning the basic skills of hurling. The children should play only in their age groups and helmets must be worn at all times during play or practice.

Under 11s (born 1992) indoor hurling continues each Friday evening at 5.45 at St. Anthony's.
