Many of the students at Scoil Barra have played with the clubs and Fergal Ryan as well as John and Alan Browne are on the current Cork hurling panel. Under 13s defeated in city league Final. In this exciting match played at the Glen Field last Sunday morning, Blackrock led by 1-4 to 4 points at half time. Jack Linehan, who had a fine game scored the goal. However the Glen came back strongly in the second half and despite the best efforts of Gordon Ahern in goal and Graham Howard, the Rockies could not convert possession to scores and eventually lost by three points. Indoor Hurling Despite the appalling weather outside, over 150 regulars and many new Rockies appeared for the commencement of the indoor hurling sessions at St. Anthony's School Hall last Saturday morning. Our thanks to all the parents who braved the weather conditions and turned up with sons (and some daughters) ready for action. For many it was their very first morning and after the initial shyness and wonder they duly got stuck in and hurled away. Next Saturday morning cannot come around quickly enough for these young hurlers who had a great time. Indoor hurling continues each Saturday morning until Saturday December 7th next. Helmets must be used at all times; these will be available to purchase by registered Rockies from next Saturday at the indoor sessions. Under 10s continue at St.Anthonys School hall Friday evenings 5.45 to 6.45. Under 11s continue at Ashton School astropitch Friday nights 8.00 to 9pm. |

William Ahern Tournament The Blackrock under 11s emerged victorious in the William Ahern tournament held at Church Road last Saturday. Despite very bad weather conditions, the standard of hurling was superb. Blackrock defeated Carrigaline by just one point in a very hard-fought match in the first semi-final. In the second semi-final extra time was required between Douglas and Sarsfields, before Douglas finished very strongly to clinch victory. The final played in a downpour produced some very good hurling, before Blackrock emerged victorious over Douglas who fought hard to the end. Despite the weather conditions, both goalkeepers, Christopher Murphy for the Rockies and Alan Bermingham for Douglas had great games, while outfield David Healy, Pat Deasy and Owen O'Farrell excelled for the Rockies. Ronan O'Sullivan scored a lovely goal for the Rockies while Liam Kennefick played well for Douglas. The William Ahern trophy was presented to Blackrock captain Paul O' Brien by Tom Cashman, who congratulated all the young hurlers from the four clubs involved. |
