Feile Na nGael weekend.

Massive crowds attended the games at Church Road played in beautiful sunshine. A huge effort organised by the Juvenile Committee, under Eamonn O'Donoghue coped admirably with the logistics of organising this huge event. Our thanks go to the many dozens of volunteers from all sections of the club who put in so much time and committment to ensure the superb operation of the Feile. Our thanks also to our old friends from Durlas Og, led by Club Chairman Tom Meehan and Secretary Andy Ryan who contributed enormously to the fantastic sporting and social weekend in which old friendships were renewed and many more established.

Surprise presentation.

A surprise presentation to the well known Blackrock treasurer Andy Hayes was held at the club pavilion on Friday 5th May. To say that Andy was surprised would be an understatement, and in an emotional speech he thanked all his family who had travelled from Mallow and elsewhere and his friends in the club for giving him and his wife Mary a wonderful night.

Earlier Tom Riordan from the Management committee outlined some of Andy's achievements and contributions to the club over many years. Among the historic facts which came as a surprise to many in the large crowd was that Andy had actually been born in Co.Tipperary and that he had actually played with Na Piarsaighs when he first arrived in Cork before he discovered his true home at the Rockies.

Frank Murphy, Chairman of the Board of Management praised his efforts on behalf of the Blackrock Club over 40 years and noted how despite his ill health he had continued to act as club treasurer throughout the recent period. A presentation of photographs from Andy's life was provided by his son Dr. Paddy Hayes who is the Club's medical officer and financial controller.

Mr. Dan Hoare a former work colleague of Andy's in the Revenue Commissioners, many of whom turned out on the night, detailed his work career and again praised his efforts to promote hurling.

The function was organised by the social committee under Terry Hassett who did a fine job in organising the huge turnout, the music and food, while the fun and stories continued until a late hour.

Primary Section Outdoor Hurling.

The April showers, westerly winds and cold were simply no match for the 150 young Rockies who braved the elements at Church Road for the start of the Blackrock outdoor hurling programme on Saturday April 1st

Their eagerness to finally begin hurling astounded parents and mentors alike and in spite of the mud and rain, it was one tired, muddy and happy gang of youngsters who departed the complex at the end of the morning.

Hurling for all young Rockies continues next Saturday morning 8th April, starting at 10am. Thanks to all who registered last Saturday, registrations will continue to be taken each Saturday morning. Hurleys, Mycro hurling helmets and Rocky gear are available each Saturday morning. Can we just remind parents to ensure that runners only are worn by young Rockies within the indoor complex itself?

Mycro Helmets Indoor hurling leagues Finals.

After 63 games one goal separated the Blues from the Cons in the Champions League Final on Saturday February 25th.. What a morning’s hurling was enjoyed by all who attended! Virtually every match was a draw or just one goal separated the contestants. “City” were declared the winners of the Contenders Cup Final following three close games with the Rockies and United. The All-Blacks sprung a major surprise when they captured the Challengers Cup Final in the final game. The Rebels and the Rovers fought all the way.

It came down to the last match in the Champions League and the favourites the Blues were fortunate to scrape past the Cons by the narrowest of margins in an absorbing contest which had the huge crowd roaring in appreciation for the skill and commitment of the young Rockies. A presentation of medals and trophies by Victor Morgan of Mycro Helmets, Wayne Sherlock and Ronan Curran took place after each final.

Our thanks go to the 70 youngsters who took part and played their hearts out, to their parents for their wholehearted support and to the Blackrock coaches who made a massive contribution.

Coaches such as James Tyner, Tom Daly, Sean Logue, Paul Reidy, Don O’Callaghan, Peter Fitzgerald, Jimmy Brohan, John Kennedy, Tony Linehan and Jody Crowley ran off the competition in an efficient manner ensuring each player played in 14 matches. Jody Crowley and John Green did a magnificent job on the league tables and results. Our thanks to Victor Morgan of Mycro Helmets who sponsored the competition and to Mr Flor O’Sullvan, Principal of St.Anthony’s School for his cooperation

Official Opening of the Blackrock Indoor Hurling Hall on Sunday 5th March.

The new Blackrock Hurling Hall will be officially opened by Uachtaran Cumann Luth Cleas Gael Mr. Sean Kelly on Sunday 5th March at 2pm.

Following the opening ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Deirdre Clune, and Minister Michael Martin, local T.D.s and guests a glamour senior hurling challenge match will be held between old rivals Cork and Kilkenny at Church Road.

The Complex was developed at a cost of 2.1 million euro, some of which was provided by the National Lottery, while the clubs own fundraising efforts are ongoing.

The complex now includes a state of the art hurling hall, dressing rooms, meeting rooms, a pitch viewing area. The facilities will be of immense benefit to the Club which now caters for almost 800 young boys and girls in the surrounding areas and represent a positive and practical investment in the local communities.

As both Cork and Kilkenny are expected to field very strong teams, this should be an immensely attractive game with championship places for players at stake. The advice is to get to Church Road early.

Prior to the Senior Hurling match an under 14 challenge game will take place between Blackrock and our old friends from Dicksboro, Co Kilkenny which should also be worth watching. Meanwhile displays of indoor hurling by boys from the Blackrock Primary section and the girls from Blackrock Camogie Club will be held in the hurling hall.

Everyone at Blackrock Hurling Club wishes this to be an enjoyable day out for all the family, so why not note the date and drop along to enjoy the very best of hurling talent.
