Blackrock under 12 and 14 panels travel to Thurles Easter Sunday 27th March saw the Blackrock under 12 and 14 panels travel to Thurles to play a series of challenge games against Durlas Og prior to the Cork and Tipperary National League game. The young Rockies, although playing extremely well had to give way to extremely committed Thurles sides. However due to the Bank Holiday weekend, both Rocky teams were short a number of regulars and this had an impact. Under 14 panel. The under 14 team had a great battle with the Tipp lads. The Rockies were slow to start and were behind 2 --- 7 to a goal supplied by Oisin O'Mahony at the interval. However an amazing resurgence in the second half following the switch of David Healy to centre-field led to a very close finish. Eoin O'Farrell played very well all through for the Rockies and aided by youngsters such as Donal Cremin and Michael Ahern they came up just short in the final run-in. Ciaran Fleming, Chris Murphy, Pat Deasy and Cathal Hannon tried hard during the hour and never gave up. Under 12 panel. The 12 panel also made a great effort, with Ciaran Moore supplying two goals and Rory Daly and David Meaney outstanding, they just lost out in the end to a fine Thurles side. Cian Scannell, Chris Ahern and Diarmuid O Shea played their part in a fine team effort. Every boy on both panels played in the games and had enough energy left to cheer the Cork hurlers on to victory later at Semple Stadium. Our thanks go to the Durlas Og Club for their wonderful hospitality and the great spirit in which the games were played. |

Launch
of Rocky hurling helmet. This
took place also at Church Road last Saturday morning. Ronan
Curran, marketing manager with Mycro Sports attended the formal
presentation of the new helmet which is now available in the
Rockies colours and contains the Rocky logo. Due to the new
rules in relation to the compulsory wearing of full face guard
helmets, the under age sections advise all players in the club
to ensure they have the correct helmet. An indication of the
outstanding success of this new Rocky helmet was that virtually
our entire stock of helmets was sold out and we received orders
for many more. It is in everyone’s best interest to ensure
that hurling continues to remain one of the safest sports around
for young people to play. |
March 2005 |
Registration
morning. A
huge crowd attended Church Road last Saturday morning to
register Rockies for 2005. An amazing total of over 350
registrations, a new record for a single morning, were taken
over the two hour period and there was also a wonderful response
to the special hurley offer. Blackrock
Primary Chairperson, Seamus Hartnett was delighted with the huge
response, “it shows that parents and children are very
interested in hurling and want to be involved in healthy outdoor
sports activity. I would like to thank everybody who made the
morning such an over whelming success and we cannot wait for
Saturday 9th April when we begin hurling outdoors at
Church Road.” Rockies can still register on Saturday 9th April or at their training sessions however completed registration forms must be returned to the club if youngsters intend to play hurling with Blackrock Primary and Juvenile sections this year. Presentation
of medals
to Under 14 and Minor B Panels and special presentations to
Stephen Guerin, Brian Aherne and Wayne Sherlock
The Blackrock Under 14 City Champions and Minor B Champions received their medals from Wayne Sherlock on Friday 25th February at a function at Church Road. Special
presentations were also made to Steven Guerin and Brian Ahern in
honour of their contribution to the Cork under15 team during
2004. Wayne
Sherlock reminded all the hurlers that if they show
determination and commitment to the game, the rewards are there
for them. He indicated how much he valued medals now as he had
won very few medals when he played underage hurling himself. He
urged the young lads to listen carefully to their coaches at all
times and to practice hurling at every opportunity. He
then paid a warm tribute to his own former hurling coaches in
Blackrock, four of whom attended the presentation, Pat Moylan,
Pat Roche, Jim Hennebry and Bobby Thornhill. Later
the Chairpersons of the Juvenile and Primary Sections, Eamonn
O’Donoghue and Seamus Hartnett presented Wayne with a framed
photograph of the 2002 Blackrock County Championship winning
team which he had captained as a gesture of thanks for all the
assistance he has provided over the years to the young hurlers
in the Blackrock Club. |

Friendly Games with Na Piarsaigh, Limerick. The under 14s and under 12s played Na Piarsaigh Limerick in two games last Sunday prior to the Cork/Limerick National League games. The under 12s had a narrow victory over a very committed Limerick outfit in what was a hard fought match. John Fitzgerald struck for two goals, while David O'Farrell put away some good points from play. Daniel Coughlan, Ross Glavin and Dean Murphy played well and put in a big effort. The under 14s lost out by a couple of points in what was an excellent match. Despite the outstanding David Healys best efforts, (he eventually finished with five goals!) aided by Eoin O'Farrell and Paul Bennett, the Limerick side just pipped the Rockies at the post. Young Chris Murphy played very well, while Mark Ryan enjoyed a good hour. The best thing about both games was that everyone who turned up got a game! Well done to all the coaches. Our thanks to the Na Piarsaigh club in Limerick City for their efforts and we wish them every success for the coming year. |

Blackrock Juvenile and Primary sections A.G.M. This was held on Friday night 14th January at the club hall.
It was preceded by a quiet moment of reflection for the family of the late Robert Holohan, the young Midleton hurler whose life was so tragically cut short.
At the AGM there were some lively debates over the growing competitive nature of underage hurling and the danger of many youngsters losing interest simply because they cannot get games. This matter had been raised by Hon Secretary Billy Reidy in his excellent annual report. He questioned whether the fun and enjoyment of playing games had disappeared and a "win at all costs" mentality had taken over in underage competitions. It was agreed that all youngsters really just wished to play games, make friends, enjoy the sport and belong and that every effort would once again be made this year to ensure these principles were upheld throughout the underage sections within the club.
All officers were loud in their praise of the Blackrock coaches who have put so much work into promoting hurling among the youngsters of the area. The voluntary commitment of these men and woman to the promotion of the game is incredible. The election of officers resulted in the following appointments for 2005.
Chairperson Juvenile Section; Eamonn O’Donoghue. Hon
Secretary; Bill Reidy. Treasurer; John O’Halloran. Vice Chairperson; Brother Patrick Fitzgibbon. Chairperson Primary Section; Seamus Hartnett. Hon Secretary; Gerard O’Mahony. |
