La na gClub at the Rockies.

Excitement is mounting at the Rockies for the big La na gClub day which will take place at Church Road on Saturday 9th May next. After the amazing success of Cork’s very first Hurlathon last February, the Rockies are again having some fun and excitement around Church Road All the various hurling panels are coming up with ideas for fun and entertainment for all the family during the course of the day. All parents and friends as well as the local community are asked to take part in the proceedings and to get into the spirit of the day. We will have the usual Saturday morning hurling, with each group arranging something to involve all the kids in the actions. A highlight will be the finals of the Under 9 and 10 Super leagues which will be held at 11am. Special medals will be presented to all participants. These are sponsored by Carey Tool Hire. These will involve some 80 boys and should produce some excitement. In the afternoon the Juvenile sections will have challenge games, free taking and penalty competitions, hurling skills, soloing, long pucks from the ground, from the hand, sideline cuts, parents skills and fun competitions. The aim is to show how integral the GAA clubs are to the life of their local communities, so it should be a great day again at the Rockies, who have been around since 1883.

U12's

Wednesday 15th April saw the replay of the Rockies V Valley Rovers match, which had been deferred due to weather, and although conditions weren’t ideal, the match proceeded. James Downey was first on the scoreboard when he blasted a shot to the net in the opening minutes. Patrick McDonagh worked really hard throughout and was rewarded with two fabulous points. Dillion Daniels did Trojan work in defence to keep Valley Rovers at bay. Blackrock dictated most of the play in the game although in fairness to Valley Rovers they never gave up and certainly upped the tempo in the second half. The final score was Blackrock 3-8 Valley Rovers 1-5. Saturday 18th saw a double header for the u/12s at Church Rd. First Passage played the Rockies in what turned out to be a low scoring but hugely exciting and enjoyable encounter. Scores were hard to come by and while both teams wasted chances, a draw after 50 minutes was a fair result with Ryan Cantwell grasping an equalising point in the dying minutes. Others to play well were Patrick McDonagh, John Boylan, Dillon Daniels and James Downey. Blackrock played Douglas in the second game in what turned out to be a tense and exciting match. Martin O Farrell fought hard throughout and was ably assisted by John Cashman and Seamus Adams. Conor and Daire O Brien were resilient in defence however Douglas, were the better team on the day, and converted their chances to run out winners. Douglas 3-3, Blackrock 0-5. Church Rd had its own curtain raiser to the Cork Waterford match, when Dungarvan visited last Sunday morning to play an U12 selection. It was a beautiful morning for hurling, as the boys in blue and white of Dungarvan battled against the green and gold of Blackrock. There was terrific talent on both sides with plenty of skill and heart evident. Martin O Farrell covered acres of ground in midfield, with Noel Holland providing excellent assistance. Blackrock had some great scores including goals from Philip Buckley and Michael O Halloran and Ryan Cantwell throwing over an excellent long range point from play. Daniel O Mahony was solid in goal throughout the encounter. Dungarvan matched Blackrock throughout the game and Blackrock did well to hold on to win. Darragh O Callaghan and Barry Grainger also contributed to a great match. We hope to return to Dungarvan later in the year for a rematch.

City league Matchs.

First into the fray were the Rockies who hosted St Vincents at home and it was end to end action. Vincents forged ahead scoring 2 goals and the Rockies had to battle hard to get back into the game. John Boylan, Darragh O Callaghan and Noel Holland lead by example as we pegged St Vincents back to a half time score 2goals to 1-1. Against the wind in the second half Noel Holland was outstanding sending quality ball into the square. The Vincents defence were extremely strong under pressure and it was very proving very difficult to get the vital scores. Eventually the pressure paid off and the result at full time was a draw at 2-2 each. Ciaran Cormack and Philip Buckley defended well for the Rockies.

A bus ride across the city then to a sunny Farranree where Blackrock lined out against Na Piarsaigh. This game was a physical encounter and the outstanding defensive play of Conor O Brien was the feature of this match. His tackling, blocking and hooking were excellent, and time and time again he drove the team on. Unfortunately scores were hard to come by and Na Piarsiagh began to dominate the game. With the Na Piarsaigh forwards converting their chances, Blackrock had an uphill battle which proved too difficult on this occasion. Na Piarsaigh ran out worthy winners in this encounter. Daniel O Mahony as always was brave in goal, and Martin O ‘Farrell fought hard in midfield.

There will be further Super Leagues for the 5 and 6 year old boys, starting in September, so if parents wish to have their budding young hurlers taking part they must ensure their boys are registered with the Blackrock club for 2008. Entries are being taken for the 2008 Mick Cashman Cup at present. A presentation of equipment for hurling and football to the local schools was held at a reception in Church Road on Saturday 12th May. The presentation by Blackrock National Hurling Club and St. Michael's Gaelic Football Club to the Primary schools took place as a result of the sponsorship obtained from Scally's Super Valu in Blackrock.

This sponsorship which involves customers signing the receipts for purchases at Scally's Super Valu, Blackrock and returning them to Church Road for the monthly draws has raised considerable sums of money for both clubs. This sponsorship results in a win win situation for everyone, especially the young children in the community and this gesture by both clubs to the local schools should encourage further the active participation of more young people in Gaelic Games. All parents are encouraged to complete and return their shopping receipts to Church Road at any time but especially on Friday nights or Saturday mornings.

Everything is now set for the annual Blackrock Hurling registration morning at Church Road next Saturday 10th from 10am to noon. All new intending hurlers are very welcome to come along, complete registration forms and become registered Rockies for 2007. All Blackrock coaches will attend throughout the morning in an administrative capacity so it's a good time for parents to have a chat or discussion with their children's hurling mentors. All Rockies are urged strongly to register on the 10th March as we then wish to put away the paperwork and take out the camans and sliotars for the remainder of 2007. A full range of hurling gear as well as good quality hurleys will be available to purchase throughout the morning.

Presentation of medals.

The Blackrock under 13 and under 15 hurling panels assembled on Friday 2nd March at the Blackrock pavilion for a presentation of City Championship medals. They were addressed by Kevin Cummins who urged them to regard these successes on the hurling fields as the beginning of their careers rather than the culmination. He pointed out that all the attributes of a good hurler are also required for a successful path through life and he wished them the very best of luck.

Other speakers, Brother Patrick Fitzgibbon and Richard Stokes referred to the heartbreaking defeats suffered by both these panels earlier in their hurling lives, yet they recovered to achieve success in 2006. This was the sign of true champions.

The trophies were presented to Captains Paul Bennett and Paul Delaney while both panels were then presented with their medals.

Master of ceremonies Eamonn O'Donoghue thanked the young Rockies, their coaches, mentors and parents for a great year.

Finals of the Mycro Indoor Hurling Leagues

St. Anthony's School Hall was packed to the rafters last Saturday morning for the finals of the Mycro Sports Indoor leagues. Unbelievably after 63 games the Champions League finals result came down to the final game and the final goal to resolve the indoor hurling bragging rights in Blackrock for 2007.

United emerged victorious on goal difference after three teams finished level on points. Team captain Paddy Lynch was thrilled with the result and with his magnificent display in the final. Coach Harry Canning was exuberant with the victory;

"We were total outsiders at the beginning, however the hard work and dedication of the young United players was incredible" he enthused as he settled down to enjoy the victory amidst the celebrations.

The Rebels captured the Challengers League title after a great battle with the Blacks. Rebels Coach Jim Brohan was also proud of his charges and praised the sportsmanship of all the youngsters who took part.

Coach Mark Dalton was equally delighted when the Blues team captured the Contenders final after coming out ahead of the City and Cons teams.

Managing Director of Mycro Sports, Mr. Victor Morgan presented the trophies and medals assisted by Cork hurlers Wayne Sherlock and Ronan Curran, Marketing manager of Mycro Sports.

This competition was again an outstanding success due in no part to coordinating skills of Jody Crowley and John Cormack along with the full cooperation of youngsters, coaches and parents.

It was a case of Blackrock's "young guns" coming good in the club's hour of need with great performances from Brian Cashman who scored 1 - 4, Paul O'Sullivan, Mike O'Donoghue, Graham Howard etc. This team will now go on to meet St. Vincents in the Evening Echo Cork County Intermediate Hurling Championship 2007.

Mycro Helmets Indoor Hurling League Round 3

Round 3 January 27th 2007

0There was a real shock at the Mycro Sports leagues on Saturday morning 27th January when table toppers " Saints" were comprehensively defeated 8 goals to 3 by a resurgent Rockies who were rooted to the foot of the table.

"We have absolutely no excuse whatever" declared John Cormack, the Saints supremo, "we were beaten by a better team, but we are still heading the table and we will not be caught again", he confidently predicted.

Once again there was some brilliant hurling at the Ballinlough venue, with the Rovers and Rebels picking up three points each from their games. United had two fine victories and joined the Rovers and Rebels on 8 points each behind the Saints with 10 points. Double winners last week, Cons just managed one point from their games and slipped down the table.

Another surprise arose when City held the Rebels to a 4 all draw but unfortunately lost out to the Rovers.

It was a case of "singing the Blues" for the Blues as they slipped to a double defeat to the All-Blacks and United.

The Cork County Board draw

2007 Review

As activity ceases on the playing fields, it is time to thank all the youngsters, coaches, administrators and supporters of the the Blackrock Hurling club who have contributed to making 2006 an excellent year. Over 500 boys registered during the year and hurling activities continued throughout the period.

Almost 40 games were played in 2006 in the Mick Cashman Cup competition and who will ever forget the final and replay which both went to extra time? Yet even after that much hurling, Eire Og and Blackrock could not be seperated. Sensibly, it was agreed to share the Cup for the year. Our thanks to all teams who took part and for the sporting attitude adopted by all participants. The good news is that it will again be held in 2007, with all clubs being asked to supply two teams of players born in 1997.

The Juvenile section experienced a very busy year also. Huge crowds visited Church Road for the Feile games in June. The Under 16s reached the final of the All-Ireland Carlow Town Cup in July before losing out by just two points to Ahane. The 15s and 13s won their respective City Championships while the 12s recently captured the Mooncoin tournament defeating Ballygunner in the final by a single point. Hurling activity continues in all agegroups within the club aided by the hard work of a dedicated team of coaches.

Indoor activity will recommence on 13th January 2007 at Ballinlough and Blackrock Hurling halls.

Dec 2006

Annual General meeting.

At the AGM of the Blackrock National Hurling club held on Monday 11th December, Club Secretary Roger Ryan and Juvenile Chairperson, Eamonn O'Donoghue announced their retirements.

Roger won a County medal in 1961 when he arrived to work in Cork and joined the Rockies. He later played with Holycross where he played alongside the great John Doyle and Michael Maher. Arriving back in Cork in the 70s he was active in the Blackrock underage for a number of years and later became involved in the Social Committee. He took over as Club Secretary about 12 years ago and his hard work has steered the club to three county titles during his period in office. Roger is succeeded as Club Secretary by Marie O'Brien, whose family is steeped in the traditions of the Blackrock Hurling Club.

Eamonn has been involved all his life with the Rockies. He has played at all grades for Blackrock and has been involved as a mentor with virtually every team at the club at some time.

Along with Leo Cantwell, he accompanied the Blackrock team, which won the very first Feile title in Thurles in 1971 and was part of the famous Blackrock and Cork teams of the 70s as well as winning a further "county" in 1985.

However, his overseeing the restructuring of the Underage sections in Blackrock in 1996 may be his greatest achievement. Eamonn has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of hurling and Gaelic games in the city. Although he has stepped down as Chairman, Eamonn will continue to assist the development of the Blackrock club in other areas in 2007. Present Vice Chairperson, Brother Patrick Fitzgibbon was appointed Chairperson of the Juvenile section for 2007.

Chairperson of Blackrock Hurling Club, Mr. Tom O'Sullivan led the tributes to both long serving officers and presented Eamonn and Roger with beautiful crystalware on behalf of the officers and members as a gesture of appreciation for their vast contribution to the club.

Dec 2006

Presentation

At a very pleasant function at the Club pavilion on Saturday 9th December Councillor Deirdre Clune presented a sponsorship cheque on behalf of her father Peter Barry to the Blackrock under-age sections. She commended the club on their tremendous work in providing a sporting and social outlet for the hundreds of local children, and for the Club's huge contribution to the local community. In response, Eamonn O'Donoghue, Chairperson of the Blackrock Juvenile section expressed his deep appreciation to the Barry family for their support for underage hurling in the local community over the years.

Junior Hurling League (2) Final. Blackrock 2 - 6 Whitechurch 1 - 6.

Played at Pairc An Locha on the Lee Road on Sunday morning 19th November 2006, in very poor weather conditions, following an outstanding game of hurling.

Behind by just a point at the interval, despite playing against a gale and blinding rain, Blackrock had shown great commitment throughout the first half. Declan Dempsey had put over a great point while Mikey O'Donoghue had added the other two from play and a free to leave the score at Blackrock 0 - 3 to Whitechurch 0 - 4.

Superb goals in the second half from Shay O'Donoghue and Cormac O'Keeffe put the Rockies on the road to victory. Declan Dempsey and Mikey O'Donoghue added the points and while Whitechurch never gave up, the Rockies were always in control.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this victory and to Aidan Long and his fellow selectors for all their efforts throughout the year.

Brian won an amazing three under 21 All-Ireland medals in a row from 1968 to 1970 with Cork, while he picked up two county medals with Blackrock. Despite his serious illness, Brian remained very active in Blackrock Hurling Club affairs and played a major role in fundraising for the Blackrock underage sections through his involvement in the Corporate Night Committee. To his wife Eileen and his family go the sympathy of everyone at Blackrock National Hurling Club. May Brian rest in peace.
